Minnesota Sweeps Sun Devils in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, October 5. THE host Golden Gophers got the best of the visiting Arizona State Sun Devils with wins in the men’s (190-95) and women’s (197-94) meets.

Freshman Daryl Turner certainly had a coming out party for Minnesota with a double this afternoon. He topped the 100 back (48.43) and 100 free (44.65) and helped Minnesota to wins in both the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.

Meanwhile, senior Derek Toomey took home the 50-yard free in 19.99, while Carl Newenhouse touched in 1:48.97 to win the 200 back. CJ Smith also earned a victory for the Golden Gophers with a 9:19.03 in the 1000 free, while Nick Hatanaka took home the 200 breast in 2:03.52.

For the women, Tess Behrens reined in a pair of titles tonight. She clinched the 100 back crown in 55.61 and the 200 back title in 2:01.23. Kierra Smith also doubled up for Minnesota with wins in the 100 breast (1:04.71) and 200 breast (2:17.40). Freshman Breanne Siwicki won her first race as a Gopher with a 10:08.89 in the 1000 free.

Overall, the Sun Devils had trouble getting to the top of the podium. Thibaut Capitaine trumped the field in the men’s 100-yard breast with a winning 56.31, while Morgan Weller took home the women’s one-meter diving crown with 295.88 points.
