MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, April 19. UNIVERSITY of Minnesota men's swimming and diving head coach Dennis Dale announced today that Jared White has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Minnesota. A native of Matthews, N.C., White will swim for the Golden Gophers in 2007-08.

White, a senior at the Hickory Grove Baptist Christian School in Charlotte, recently won the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association title in the 200-yard freestyle and placed second in the 100 backstroke. He was named all-state by the Charlotte Observer. White also swims for the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club under head coach Jay Benner. He swam at the 2007 U.S. Spring Championships in East Meadow, N.Y. last month, finishing 32nd in the 100 backstroke and 39th in the 50 freestyle. He was also a 2006 U.S. Junior Nationals qualifier.

"We are very excited that Jared is joining our program," assistant coach Bill Tramel said. "From the first day when Jay Benner called me about him, I was very interested. Jay spoke very highly of his character, ability and desire. The Charlotte area has a very strong swimming community. Jared fit in well with our team and that is definitely something we look for when we invite someone into our program. He is going to have a great career at the University of Minnesota."
