Minnesota Promotes Volunteer Assistant Coach Steve Miller to Full Time Role

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, August 16. STEVE Miller has joined the University of Minnesota swimming and diving program as an assistant coach for men's and women's swimming, Golden Gopher head coach Kelly Kremer announced Wednesday. Miller, who was a standout swimmer at Minnesota, has spent the last two seasons as the Gophers' volunteer assistant coach.

“Steve was an obvious choice for Golden Gopher swimming and diving,” Kremer said. “He served as our volunteer assistant coach for the past two seasons and worked most closely with our male sprinters. He is very well respected among all student-athletes, alumni, and staff associated with our program. We are very fortunate to welcome him as a member of our coaching staff.”

In his two seasons as a volunteer assistant, Miller's main duties were assisting Kremer and head men's coach Dennis Dale with mid-distance freestyle swimmers and breaststrokers on both the women's and men's side. Of the student-athletes he helped mentor, two became NCAA Champions and four became Big Ten Champions.

“The thing that makes the University of Minnesota so special is the people,” Miller said. “I am so happy to be a part of this staff and have the opportunity to work with these student-athletes.”

Along with his duties at Minnesota, Miller also served as an assistant coach for the Twin Cities Swim Team and the St. Croix Swim Club from 2009-2011. While with the St. Croix Swim Club, Miller helped guide the Senior Women to a second-place overall finish at the 2010 Speedo Champions Series. Miller also was the head camp counselor at the Minnesota Swim Camps in the summer of 2008.

Prior to becoming the Gophers' volunteer assistant, Miller was a standout at Minnesota in 2008 and 2009. Miller was a four-time NCAA First Team All-American, earning the distinction twice as a member of the 400 freestyle relay, as well as a member of the Gophers' 200 freestyle relay and the 800 free relay teams. In 2009, Miller and his 200 medley relay team claimed Big Ten Champion honors, helping Miller earn All-Big Ten First Team accolades.

Miller graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2009 with a B.S. in geography and is currently pursuing his Master's of Education in sport management.
