Minnesota Adds Two Signees

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, May 14. THE University of Minnesota announced the signing of a pair of Wisconsin natives to its men's swimming and diving recruiting class for the 2007-08 season. David Hawker and Rob Schintzler have both signed Acceptance of Admission forms to join the team next year.

Hawker and Schintzler are both seniors at Wausau East High School and compete for the Wausau Tide club team under Abby Dunham.

Hawker was the 2007 Wisconsin State champion in the 500 freestyle to become Wausau East's first State champion in school history and helped them to a third place team finish. Hawker also finished fourth in the 500 free as a junior. Hawker is the third Wisconsin 500 free champion to sign with the Gophers in the past four years, joining Erich Welton (2004) and Kevin Ewald (2006). He owns top times of 4:36.55 in the 500 free (short course yards), 9:28.99 in the 1000 free and 15:58.69 in the 1650 free.

Schintzler was the 2007 Wisconsin State runner-up in the 100 breaststroke and placed eighth in the 50 freestyle. He owns top times of 58.09 in the 100 breaststroke, 2:10.72 in the 200 breast and 21.67 in the 50 free.

"We are very happy to have two great student-athletes join us from the same high school," assistant coach Bill Tramel said. "When I spoke with Abby (Dunham) about David and Rob, she had nothing but positive things to say about them, emphasizing the character they both have. Once they visited Minnesota and I spent time with them, I could see why Abby thought so highly of them. David is the third Wisconsin 500 Freestyle State Champion to choose Minnesota in the past four years. He will fit very well into our distance program and I expect him to make an immediate contribution.
Rob finished second at the Wisconsin State Championships in the 100 breast, so I know he can compete at a high level. Our breaststroke group will be a lot of fun to work with next year."

The addition of Hawker and Schintzler brings Minnesota's 2007-08 incoming freshman class to 11 along with Jared White (Matthews, N.C.), Kevin Baseheart (Milwaukee, Wis.), Chris Peterson (St. Charles, Ill.), Curt Carlson (Maple Grove, Minn.), Michael Richards (Falcon Heights, Minn.), Zach Weis (St. Paul, Minn.), Andrew Brown (Centennial, Colo.), Matt Crees (Chanhassen, Minn.) and Philip Greenberg (Eden Prairie, Minn.).

Special thanks to Minnesota for contributing this report.
