Midlife Health Crisis Inspires Perspective On Life And Swimming

PHOENIX, Arizona, March 13. THE March edition of the SWIM section of Swimming World Magazine features an article by Masters swimmer Dan Stephenson on how the benefits of swimming helped him get through a recent health crisis.

Click play below for a multimedia look Inside Swimming World Magazine as presented by The Morning Swim Show's Peter Busch:

Once he finished swimming at the college level, Stephenson then "retired" from the sport, and started on a new life path that did not include spending hours in chlorinated water. As the author approached his 50th birthday, his second swimming "career" began. It was during this time he gained a long view on the many benefits of swimming which he had not appreciated as a younger age grouper. During his health scare, Stephenson came to have a much keener respect for possessing the heart of a swimmer.

This month's "Lane Leader" recognizes a recent International Swimming Hall of Fame inductee, Bob Strand. Strand has more than 40 world records and 75 USMS records in his 18-year Masters career.

In "Pool's Edge" Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen offers eight tips to help older athletes for their next competition.
