Michigan Women, Cal Men Win Georgia Fall Invitational

The University of Michigan women’s swim team won the Georgia Fall Invitational on Sunday.

The No. 4 Wolverines concluded the three-day meet with 991.5 points. No. 5 Georgia was second with 833, edging No. 6 Cal (830). No. 16 Virginia took fourth with 633.5, followed by No. 25 UCLA (126, diving only), Harvard (96.5, diving only) and No. 13 Auburn (64, diving only).

In the men’s meet, No. 2 Cal won with 1,014 points. No. 4 Michigan was second (915), followed by No. 12 Georgia (674), No. 10 Auburn (664), No. 23 Virginia (378) and Harvard (80).

The Michigan women started strong, going 1-2 in a pair of individual events.

Rose Bi won the 1,650 freestyle (16:02.42) to go 1-2 with G Ryan (16:05.88). Both were NCAA “B” cuts.

Michigan’s Miranda Tucker won the 200 breaststroke in 2:08.73 to go 1-2 with teammate Emily Kopas (2:09.75), who finished ahead of Georgia’s Meghan Raab (2:10.16).

Cal’s Abbey Weitzeil out-touched Michigan’s Siobhan Haughey in the 100 freestyle. Weitzeil finished in 46.95 and Haughey was second in 47.20. The Wolverines added more points in the event with Gabby DeLoof taking fifth (48.35) and Catie DeLoof taking sixth (48.60). Georgia’s Veronica Burchill (47.89) was third and Virginia’s Caitlin Cooper was fourth (48.26).

Cal’s Amy Bilquist won the 200 backstroke in 1:50.48, an NCAA automatic cut. Michigan’s Clara Smiddy was second (1:51.03) and Georgia’s Kylie Stewart was third (1:51.88).

In the closest event of the day, Cal’s Noemie Thomas and Virginia’s Jenn Marrkand tied to win the 200 butterfly in 1:54.12.

Bilquist, Katie McLaughlin, Valerie Hull and Weitzeil won the 400 freestyle relay (3:10.95) ahead of Virginia (3:12.06) and Michigan (3:12.21).

Georgia’s Freida Lim won platform diving with 289.45 points.

In the men’s meet, Cal’s Justin Lynch (42.01) and Ryan Hoffer (42.28) went 1-2 in the 100 free. Michael Jensen was fourth at 42.47 behind Auburn’s Peter Holoda (42.44). Michigan’s Paul Powers was fifth (42.79) and Cal’s Pawel Sendyk was sixth (42.91), giving the Golden Bears four of the top six spots.

Cal’s Andrew Seliskar won the 200 breaststroke in 1:53.05 ahead of Michigan’s Jacob Montague (1:53.23). Zheng Quah won the 200 butterfly in 1:40.68, going 1-2 with Michael Thomas (1:41.22) — both NCAA “A” cuts.

Lynch, Jensen, Seliskar and Hoffer won the 400 freestyle relay (2:48.42) ahead of Auburn (2:51.04) and Cal’s B team (2:51.66).

Michigan got a similar 1-2 punch in the mile from the men as Felix Auboeck won in 14:43.76 ahead of teammate PJ Ransford (14:49.36).

Auburn’s Hugo Gonzalez won the 200 back in 1:39.05, an NCAA “A” cut. Cal’s Daniel Carr (1:40.65) and Bryce Mefford (1:40.84) followed with “B” cuts. Auburn’s Scott Lazeroff won platform diving with 384.15 points.
