Michigan high school girls swimming state championship meets are postponed with a new COVID-19 restriction that goes into affect on Wednesday in Michigan.  Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced the upcoming change on Sunday. The postponement is for three weeks, but could be changed if cases in Michigan continue to rise according to the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA).

There are three divisions in Michigan high school swimming and those state meets were scheduled for Saturday.

The meets were already changed to timed finals to help combat the possible spread of COVID-19 by limiting contact between swimmers with fewer swims.

Other fall sports in Michigan also saw their postseasons postponed. Football and volleyball are the only other MHSAA sports in Michigan that haven’t completed their fall seasons. Boys water polo is a fall season but not sanctioned by the MHSAA. It is governed by the Michigan Water Polo Coaches Association and had already postponed its season to the spring.

The restrictions will likely push into the beginning of the winter seasons as well, meaning the boys swimming and diving season might start a little late. Other winter sports in Michigan are boys and girls basketball, hockey, wrestling, bowling and competitive cheer.

The boys swim season was postponed before the state meet in March in heartbreaking fashion. It was postponed just two days before the state meet and because of the pandemic, was never completed.

There is a chance that the girls season could be the same if it gets worse in Michigan. But if it gets better, it will remain a postponement.

Awful Just once consider what you are doing to kids

Cindy Sykes Denny just think what you would be doing to the kids if they all became ill, or you lost one if them with Covid.

Stacey Metzger Korecki yup and here in CT our girls were only allowed to go as far as their conference meets this fall and the meets were all virtual. No states, no opens. And winter sports are on hold at the moment; no start date as of yet.

It wasn’t just timed files; they were splitting each division into multiple meets so that there would be a really limited number of swimmers at each location. And, rather obviously, there will now be no girls high school swim championship this year just like there was no boys meet last year (that was canceled the day before, as the teams staying in hotels were loading up their vans and cars to drive to the meet. It is amazing everything that has been done to limit the risks and protect the athletes and their families.

And we are now into month 8 of the two week shutdown to flatten the curve.

Here we go again! So devastating to many. 3 days shy of a very restricted and safe protocol state meet for these girls. So sad!

Jessica Middleton Newman high schools. There are club teams here that still have no pool access. Our team is practicing but there are no meets. The 18&u championship meet was supposed to be in early December and just got cancelled.

Pretty much like us in section 3 of NY. No practice for clubs or high school. Unless you own your own pool. No meets unless your teams own their own pool and then you can do intrasquad meet. Most kids have not been in a pool since march to even train.
Our girls high school was moved to march. No state no sectionals and most likely virtual.

Michigan is crazy

I know this is painful. Our son, Jon, is head men and women’s swim coach at Emory University in Atlanta. Two days in March before NCAA Nationals the NCAA cancelled the meet involving 65 teams from all over the country. The swimmers were devastated. This fall Emory cancelled all fall and winter sports. As a parent of a coach I Am heartsick but I also know we need to do what we can to keep these kids safe during these horrific times.
