OMAHA, Nebraska, June 28. ONE of the scheduled matchups between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte will not happen this week, as Bob Bowman announced this evening that Phelps will not swim the 200 backstroke preliminaries tomorrow.

Phelps will only swim the 200 individual medley preliminaries tomorrow, the event which he won in 2004 and 2008 and is the reigning Olympic champion.

The announcement means Phelps and Lochte will only meet once in Saturday's finals, provided they make the 200 IM final as expected.

Phelps had participated in the 200 backstroke at the 2004 Olympic Trials, finishing second behind Aaron Peirsol's world-record swim. Phelps would later drop the event from his Olympic schedule. He also planned to swim the 200 back at the 2008 Trials, but scratched from preliminaries.
