Michael Andrew, 17, of the USA has been enjoying a successful first World Championships at the 13th edition of the meet. The 17-year-old claimed gold in the men’s 100 individual medley in finals of day four of the championships, and qualifeid for semi-finals of the men’s 50 breaststroke in day five prelims.
Andrew’s qualifying time of 26.56 earned him the seventh place seed and lowered the existing World Junior Record in the event. The previous record was a 26.67 set in December 2015 by Turkey’s Huseyin Sakci.
FINA first began recognizing short course meter records in January of 2015 and simply set “benchmarks” for times. As those benchmark times are bypassed the record book begins to fill with names.
