Men’s 200 Butterfly, Prelims Day 3: Michael Phelps and Japan’s Yamamoto Tie As Fastest Qualifiers; Tom Malchow will be there too.

By Stephen J. Thomas

ATHENS, Greece August 15. IT was back to business this morning for world record-holder Michael Phelps after his bronze medal swim in the 4 x 100 freestyle relay yesterday. The bullet from Baltimore took his prelim swim in the 200m butterfly very easy, going out in 56.92 and coming home in 1:00.44 to take the final heat.

Phelps said after his race that the US team was disappointed with the third placing. “It took a lot out of us emotionally, it was difficult as a team, very hard,” he said. Phelps is keen to use the disappointment as a motivator for his two races – the final of the 200 free and this semi-final. “We fell off the horse last night. We have to get back on and get rolling again.”

Takashi Yamamoto, the ’03 World Champs silver medalist behind Phelps, took the previous heat in the same time, 1:57.36. He was happy with winning his heat and said he felt good.

Pawel Korzeniowski of Poland was next fastest in 1:57.45 followed by 2000 Olympic gold medalist, American Tom Malchow (1:57.75). Malchow said after his race he was still having trouble with the damaged tendon in his shoulder. “It’s a factor, I can’t fix it but hopefully I can get around it and use my experience,” he said.

Other top qualifiers include China’s Wu Peng (1:57.96), the Aussie bronze medalist from Sydney, Justin Norris (1:58.05), then a group of three: 33-year-old French veteran Franck Esposito, Russian Anatoli Poliakov and Romanian Ioan Gherghel, who all qualified with 1:58.12.
