Megan Deuel Wins Four at NYSPHSAA Girls Swim and Dive Championships

At the 2017 NYSPHSAA Girls Swim and Dive Championships the team from Pittsford opened the finals session with a dominant victory in the 200 medley relay. Becca EvansSarah CooperMegan Deuel, and Sarah Smith stopped the clock in 1:43.92, nearly four seconds ahead of the next best team.

Chloe Stepanek, a sophomore from Northport Commack, raced ahead of the field in the 200 freestyle, winning the event in 1:47.63, just three tenths shy of the state record. Fox Lane’s Noelle Kaufmann (1:50.98) and Ursuline’s Kate Amar (1:52.46) were second and third. Stepanek also won the 100 freestyle, clearing 50 with a 49.93. Pittsford’s Evans (50.94) and Penfield’s Toni Naccarella (51.26) followed.

Amar’s teammate Josephine Panitz earned 200 IM gold with a 2:02.68. Evans added a silver to her medal collection in 2:03.62. Finishing third was Cornwall’s Jessica Pryne (2:04.56). Pryne later won 500 freestyle gold. The sophomore touched in 4:52.72. Pelham’s Madison Hartigan (4:57.87), Mamaroneck’s Kim Jogis (4:58.05) and Clarkstown’s Ryan Evangelista (4:59.14) all cleared five minutes as well.

Penfield went one-two in the 50 freestyle as senior Naccarella and sophomore Serafina Viola were the first two to the wall in 23.45 and 23.52 respectively. Oceanside’s Catherine Stanford placed third (23.84).

The state diving title came down to a mere point. Newburgh Free Academy’s Danielle Scarano scored 495.80 points while Queensbury’s Megan Cook totaled 494.80 points. Brighton’s Hannah Butler was not far back with 484.45 points.

Pittsford’s Deuel earned her second victory of the day with a 54.23 100 fly. Burnt Hills Scotia’s Olivia Jack and Scarsdale’s Joy Jiang earned silver and bronze in 55.00 and 55.53.

Pittsford kept the relays rolling as Evans, Molly Brennan, Smith, and Deuel clocked a 1:35.52 in the 200 freestyle relay. Penfield’s Viola, Mari NaccarellaAnna Baumer, and Toni Naccarella were runners up in 1:37.05, a half second ahead of Bethlehem Central’s Syndey SorbelloMaggie HartmanAnna Bernasconi, and Megan Novak (1:37.52).

Deuel was back again, this time picking up 100 backstroke gold in 54.83. Fredonia’s Riley Drummond (55.48) and Niskayuna’s Yunfan Dong (55.80) placed second and third.

After a runner up finish in the 100 fly senior Jack won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.06. Great Neck South’s Jessica Whang (1:02.77) was on Jack’s heels. Panitz placed third in 1:03.66.

Penfield took down Pittsford in the final relay. Naccarella, Nenadic, Viola, and Naccarella touched in 3:32.60 to Pittsford’s Brennan, Sarah MinnighSadie Wallis, and Brennan’s 3:33.78.
