Megan Clark Splits 21.75 As Northeastern Breaks Relay Record On Night One Of CAA Championships

Day one of the 2018 Colonial Athletic Association men’s and women’s Swimming and Diving Championships was highlighted by Northeastern’s new meet and all-time record in the women’s 4×50 medley relay. Sophomore Megan Clark anchored the Huskies’ winning relay in 21.75, her fastest time by one second and the quickest of the field.

After day one, William and Mary leads the women’s meet with 72 points, followed by Northeastern (68), Drexel (64), Towson (62), UNCW (52), Delaware (52) and James Madison (34). Drexel currently sits in first of the men’s meet with 116 points, followed by UNCW (91), Delaware (88), Towson (87) and William and Mary (80).

Women’s 4×50 Medley Relay

The 2018 CAA Championships began with Northeastern setting a new meet and all-time record in the opening relay. The team of Sidney Smith (25.70), Klara Juliusson (27.91), Sara Touchette-McGowan (23.92) and Megan Clark (21.75) combined for a final time of 1:39.28, breaking the old mark set last year. Clark had the fastest anchor split of the field by nearly a full second.

After breaking the CAA meet record last year, Drexel’s Alexa Kutch, Gab Rudy, Hollie Hopf, and Alicia Diaz settled for second in 1:39.90. William and Mary’s Katie Sell, Annie Valls, Abby Mack, and Annie Miller finished third in 1:40.58.

Men’s 4×50 Medley Relay

Wyatt Grubb (22.87), Devin McNulty (24.48), Jack Doherty (21.16) and Colin Wright (19.56) combined to give William and Mary the first win of the men’s meet, stopping the clock in 1:28.07, nearly a full second ahead of the field.

Towson’s Owen Robinson, Ryan O’Leary, Jack Saunderson and Matthew Essing finished second in 1:29.00, while Drexel’s Jason Arthur, Ralph Cannarozzi III, JT Lumpkin, and Kiran Richardson took a close third in 1:29.01.

Men’s 1-Meter Diving

Drexel swept the top two spots in the first diving event of the CAA Championships. Sophomore Anthony Musciano, who was second after prelims, posted a score of 277.45 for the gold.

His teammate Simon Carne grabbed the silver medal with a score of 265.80 and Delaware freshman Jacob Lukens took bronze with 260.95 points.

UNCW’s Seth O’Dea (251.40), UNCW’s Trent Igoe (248.25), Drexel’s Joel Keefer (239.20), Towson’s Will Canny (238.05) and Towson’s John Casey (188.10) completed the top eight.

Women’s 4×200 Free Relay

William and Mary’s Megan Bull (1:48.45), Morgan Smith (1:49.28), Tara Tiernan (1:48.62) and Maria Oceguera (1:48.77) won the 4×200 free relay in a final time of 7:15.12, dropping over 11 seconds from their entry time to take the gold.

After disqualifying in the 4×50 medley relay, Jillian Breeger, Katie Parker, Quinn MacMillan and Bonnie Zhang grabbed second for James Madison in 7:17.23. Towson’s Kendall Krumenacker, Annemarie Schnoor, Megan Cowan and Sarah Margaret Locke took third in 7:19.81.

Men’s 4×200 Free Relay

William and Mary’s Eric Grimes (1:38.32), Carter Kale (1:38.81), Ben Skopic (1:37.40) and Kyle Neri (1:38.47) won a close relay battle to give the Tribe men a sweep of night one’s relays. The quartet finished first in 6:33.00, only 0.38 ahead of the runner-up.

Second place went to Drexel’s Stithies Malamas, Patrick Cobb, Luke Hanner, and Kiran Richardson in 6:33.38. UNCW’s Jack Cosgrove, Brandon Cu, Brad Allison and Mack Nesbit finished third in 6:39.44.
