NEW COMMIT: Johns Hopkins University has picked up a new verbal commitment for the fall of 2021 from freestyler Meg Susil of West Des Moines, Iowa.

She will become the second Blue Jay in the family as her uncle, Robert Susil, swam for and graduated from Johns Hopkins under former head coach George Kennedy.

She told Swimming World:

“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at Johns Hopkins University!  My values aligned perfectly with the vision coach Armstrong has set for the team.  I couldn’t have done it without the unconditional love and support of my family, teachers and coaches (Megan Oesting and Frankie Hanson).  Let’s go Blue Jays!”

Susil, who does her club swimming with Eastern Iowa Swimming Federation, finished fourth in the 200 IM and fifth in the 200 free at Iowa Seniors in February. In Summer 2019, she won the 400m free at Iowa LCM Seniors before going on to take eighth in the 1500m free and 12th in the 800m free at Des Moines Futures.

Her best times include:

  • 100 free – 52.26
  • 200 free – 1:50.46
  • 500 free – 4:54.36
  • 1000 free – 10:09.46
  • 1650 free – 17:08.28
  • 200 IM – 2:06.60

Also competing for Dowling Catholic High School, Susil is a four-time Iowa State Championship finalist. The All-American finished third in the 200 free and fourth in the 500 free as a junior while taking eighth and fifth, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season.

In 2019, she led her team to their first-ever state title. Susil is also a two-time First Team and four-time Second-Team All- State selection.

Susil will make an immediate impact when she arrives on campus next fall as her best times in the 200/500/1000/1650 would’ve ranked No. 1 on the Blue Jays’ lineup last season. Her best time in the 1000 free is already eight seconds faster than the school record of 10:17.92, and she’s just seven seconds shy of the program mark in the mile.
