Meet of the Week Recap: Purdue Quad Day One

By Jason Marsteller

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, February 1. WHILE snowfall is dominating the region, the Purdue Boilermakers hosted a quad dual meet as the SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week. The inclement weather actually caused a change to the schedule as the Minnesota women were unable to make it for the first night of swimming. For complete dual meet scores, please see below.

Wisconsin whitewashed the women's event with a title sweep. The quartet of Hannah McClurg, Jackie Vavrek, Christine Zwiegers and Maggie Meyer won the 200 free relay with a B-cut time of 1:32.68, before Candice Peak claimed the 200 IM with a 2:04.05.

Gabby Maddalena scored the 500 free title with a B-cut time of 4:52.04, while Meyer claimed the 200 back in a B-cut 1:59.17. Peak also surpassed the B cut in the 200 back with a second-place 1:59.37.

After McClurg won the 100 free in 51.23, Jen Illescas took home the 200 fly with a B-cut time of 2:01.33.

Meyer, Rosie Morahan, Katie Imhoff-Smith and McClurg completed the domination with a B-cut time of 3:42.55 to win the 400 medley relay. Meyer's 100 back leadoff of 54.76 cleared the B-cut threshold.

Diving proved to be the lone savior for Purdue with Ashley Karnes snagging the 1m title with a 281.35, and the 3m with a 321.30 tally.

The men's meet proved to be more competitive as Purdue won six titles and Minnesota took home four.

Romain Maire doubled for the Boilermakers with wins in the 200 IM (1:50.20) and 200 back (1:47.83), while Andrew Langenfeld clocked a B-cut time of 1:46.97 to win the 200 fly. In the 100 free, John Schmitt touched first in 44.94.

Kyle Mitrione led a zone-qualifying top three sweep in the 3m with 351.35 points. David Colturi (343.45), Zach Schultz (336.95) joined him with zone cuts.

The Golden Gophers did their damage in the relays. Colin Lee-To, Jason Timmer, Mike Woodson and Michael Richards won the 200 free relay in 1:21.05, while Jared White, Lee-To, Woodson and Curt Carlson topped the 400 medley relay with a B-cut time of 3:15.55.

Meanwhile, Ray Bertuzzi clocked a B-cut time of 4:26.61 to win the 500 free and Lee-To pocketed the 100 breast title with a B-cut 54.55. Jon Roberts placed second in the 100 breast with a B-cut time of 55.02.

The meet continues at the Boilermaker Aquatics Center tomorrow at noon, and hopefully the Minnesota women will be able to make it through the snow for the competition.
