Meet of the Week Recap: Arizona vs. Southern California; NCAA Qualifying Bonanza

TUCSON, Arizona, November 9. IN a SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week, Arizona swept Pac 10 rival Southern California. The No. 4 Arizona men beat No. 12 USC, 178-120, while the No. 4 Arizona women rolled over No. 15 Southern California, 175.5-113.5. In the men's meet, Arizona claimed 12 titles against USC's four, while the Arizona women took home nine crowns ahead of USC's seven.

An NCAA qualification mark bonanza occurred in Tucson, as a trio of A cuts and 39 B cuts were posted by each of the teams. Southern California's Rebecca Soni clocked A cuts in the 100 (1:01.25) and 200 (2:12.13) breaststrokes, while Arizona's Annie Chandler also qualified in the 100 breast (1:01.80).

Darian Townsend paced the Arizona men with a trio of titles. Individually, he won the 200 free (1:35.60) and 100 free (44.17), while also helping the 200 medley relay of Albert Subirats (21.98), Ivan Barnes (24.51), Townsend (21.70) and Jordan Smith (20.08) win in 1:28.27.

Subirats, along with the relay win, also touched first in the 100 back (47.68), while Barnes won the 100 (55.23) and 200 (2:01.68) breaststrokes. Meanwhile, rookie Cory Chitwood put on a show with titles in the 200 back (1:46.39) and 200 fly (1:50.13). Matt Bisordi finished as the only other multiple titlist for Arizona with diving wins on the one-meter (324.30) and three-meter (355.50).

Matt Biel (1000 free – 9:21.84) and Nicholas Nilo (50 free – 20.34) covered the opposite ends of the freestyle spectrum for the other Arizona wins.

The USC men, on the other hand, finished with four titles. Kevin Little (500 free – 4:45.80), Bryce Elser (100 fly – 50.02) and Vanni Mangoni (400 IM – 3:57.80) each walked away with an individual title, while the team of Jake Grosser (46.49), Ankur Poseria (46.55), Richard Gosper (46.13) and Kevin Bartell (46.73) finished with a title-winning time of 3:05.90.

For the Arizona women, Hailey DeGolia claimed a title trifecta. She won the 100 back (54.55), while also pitching in on the 200 medley and 400 free relays. DeGolia (24.91), Annie Chandler (28.48), Lara Jackson (23.76) and Courtney Cashion (22.86) won the 200 medley in 1:40.01, while Dana Christ (52.82), Leone Vorster (50.58), DeGolia (52.73) and Jacquelyn Craft (53.34) nabbed the 400 free title in 3:29.47.

Christ, meanwhile, finished with the title in the 100 fly (55.00), while Joni Keith (1000 free – 10:03.33), Jenny Forster (200 fly – 2:02.24), Lara Jackson (50 free – 22.80), Taylor Baughman (100 free – 50.13) and Caitlin Iversen (200 back – 2:01.10) each took home a title.

The Women of Troy, however, had three wins from Soni. On top of the aforementioned breaststroke sweep, Soni also clocked a time of 4:23.03 in the 400 IM. Diver Kim Popp swept the diving titles with tallies of 236.32 on the one-meter and 264.30 on the three-meter.

Other winners for USC included Rachael Waller (200 free – 1:49.25) and Whitney Hentzen (500 free – 4:52.69).
