Meet of the Week Preview: Williams College at Army

By Jason Marsteller

PHOENIX, Arizona, November 15. ON Saturday, SwimmingWorldMagazine.com will cover a pair of college meets as part of the Meet of the Week program. We will feature the Delta State at Ouachita Baptist Division II battle, and the inter-division match-up between Williams College and Army.

Here is a quick preview of the Williams College/Army match-up:

Date and Time: Saturday, November 18, 2006 – 1 p.m.
Location: West Point, N.Y.
Facility: Crandall Pool

Williams College's Last Time Out:
This is Williams' first competition of the year. WC is coming into the meet short-handed as the team may not bring diver due to injuries. Also, many of WC's top sprinters are in the midst of the closing days of the men's water polo season.

Looking forward with Williams College's head coach Steven Kuster:
I expect our team to be fired up and ready to race this weekend. Regardless of the fact that this is our first meet, we look to have as many of the races close and competitive as possible.

Army's Last Time Out:
For the men, freshman Kyle Newman doubled in the distance swimming events and junior Greg Sievers swept the boards, but their efforts could not prevent Army from falling to host Connecticut, 157-143, in a meet that went down to the final event on Nov. 11. The loss was the first of the season for the Black Knights (3-1), snapping their modest three-match win streak. Army took first in seven of the 16 events to head into the 400 free relay trailing by nine points and needing to sweep the first two spots in order to win, while a first and third would earn a tie. The Huskies settled the issue when they edged the Black Knights behind a 3:09.14 clocking to Army's 3:10.02. Newman posted Army's first win of the meet with a winning time of 9:52.86. Newman then led a sweep in the shorter 500 free, touching in 4:43.97. Sievers compiled 275.54 points to win the low board, then returned later to claim the high board with a 342.82 composite en route to his third sweep of the season.

In women's action, senior Amanda Otto registered a pair of wins as Army suffered a 161-131 defeat to the Huskies. The Black Knights (1-3) jumped out to a quick start by taking the opening 200 medley relay in a time of 1:50.76 behind the foursome of Blair Miller, Kim DeFiori, Chelsey Freeman and Paige Dellavalle. The Huskies went on to capture 10 of the next 11 event to put the meet out of reach. Otto collected her first victory of the meet when she beat the field in the 200-yard freestyle with her winning time of 1:56.40, then returned later to win the 200 I.M. in 2:12.03, logging season bests in both. Freshman Lindsay Adao captured the three-meter board for the third time this season with her winning total of 207.90 points in leading an Army sweep. Cora Freeman beat the field in the 50 freestyle, while sister Chelsey Freeman was first in the 100 butterfly (59.11). Army closed the meet winning its sixth event, the final 400 freestyle with Miller, Ann DiDomenico, Amy Tang and Liz Johnson teaming for a first-place showing of 3:53.27.

Looking forward with Army head coach Mickey Wender:
I'm looking forward to the meet with Williams. They are one of the top Division III teams in the country and have some very talented athletes. I think there will be a lot of good races.
