Meet of the Week Preview: Scranton vs. Susquehanna

By Brian Savard

PHOENIX, Arizona, November 28. WHILE much of the attention this weekend will be on the Texas Invitational as well as the USA Short Course National Championships, SwimmingWorldMagazine.com will also be featuring another Meet of the Week with Susquehanna visiting Scranton.

Here is a quick preview of the match-up:

Date and Time: Saturday, December 1, 2007 at 1 p.m.
Location: Scranton, Pennsylvania

The Crusaders and Royals continue a long-standing rivalry in the newly-formed Landmark Conference. Scranton and Susquehanna both formerly competed in the Middle Atlantic Conference. The men's and women's teams from both Scranton and Susquehanna enter the meet undefeated in Landmark competition.

Scranton's women's team has stockpiled all-around talent over the years, and the Royals have a record that accurately reflects that. They are the favorite to win the inaugural Landmark title, but the Crusaders enter the meet coming off of an upset win against Catholic.

Despite placing ahead of Scranton in two of the past three MAC Championships, the Susquehanna men have been unable to execute the win in the dual meet season.

Susquehanna's Last Time Out:
Susquehanna swept Catholic at home in a Landmark Conference meet. The men beat the Cardinals, 111.5-88.5, while the women upset Catholic, 107-98.

Looking forward with Susquehanna's head coach Ged Schweikert:
The Scranton/Susquehanna meet has a long history of coming down to the final events. They are a very talented, well-coached squad and we look forward to the challenge.

Scranton's Last Time Out:
The Royal men edged the Gophers of Goucher by a 85-75 final on Nov. 10. Scranton's women's team swam a double-dual meet against both Goucher and Juniata and won both contests by scores of 128-109 and 128-16, respectively.

Looking forward with Scranton's head coach Tomm Evans:
On Swimming Susquehanna:
We always look forward to swimming against them. They have a great program and we have nothing but respect for their coaches and athletes.

On Scranton's Season So Far:
I'm impressed by the positive impact that our freshman class has had on our program so far. You never know what impact they'll have, but the freshmen that stayed with us are working hard and making us a much better team.

On One Event To Watch For Saturday:
Both the men's and women's 400 individual medley should be a great race this weekend. We are very strong in that event with juniors Joe Veselovsky and Erin O'Connor, and I know that Susquehanna has a couple of good swimmers that should make that event exciting. It's an event that isn't swum too often, but I think the fans that come to Saturday's meet will find it to be one of the better events of the day.
