With that being said, here is a quick preview of the Cal State Bakersfield/UC San Diego match-up:

Date and Time: Saturday, November 11, 2006 – 1 p.m.
Location: San Diego, Calif.
Facility: Canyonview Pool

Cal State Bakersfield's Last Time Out:
Cal State Bakersfield is a former Division II powerhouse that is in its first-year of transition to the Division I level. Its last time out came on Oct. 28 with the men battling the mighty California Bears, and the women finishing second at the Lancer Cup.

In a men's dual meet not scored for team results, Alexey Belyy broke up the Cal dominance in the early-morning meet with a win in the 400 IM in 4:10.90. Belyy was also third in the 200 IM in 1:59.39. Sean Ogren, the 2006 NCAA Division II Diver of the Year, came back from a fifth-place finish in the one-meter diving competition to win the three-meter event with a score of 263.85. Also for Bakersfield, Justin Burdine-Ortega placed third in the 50 breast in 28.38, while Piotr Gegotek took third in the 100 free (47.34) and second in the 200 free (1:46.42).

The women set four meet records to highlight an outstanding season-opening day for the Roadrunners at the Lancer Cup at Cal Baptist. The four meet records highlighted the day, starting with the 300 butterfly relay. The team of Simone Swanepoel, Lexi Kelly and Niki Peck won the event in 3:01.44 for a meet record. The team of Astrid Amsallem, Joelle Johnson, Vicky Dinan and Swanepoel followed that with a meet-record of their own winning the 800 free relay in 7:57.22. The Roadrunners continued with a meet record in the 400 medley relay with Erin Kraft, Swanepoel, Peck and Leah Felber taking the event in 4:03.36. Finally, Bakersfield also set a meet record in the 1500 freestyle relay with Amsallem, Dinan and Johnson winning in 15:55.38.

Looking forward with Cal State Bakersfield head men's coach Morgan Bailey:
Scott McGihon runs a quality program down there in San Diego. We look forward to going there and challenging ourselves this weekend. We will take any opportunity we can get to race and further prepare ourselves for the rest of the season, especially against programs like UC San Diego that are competitive and desire to win as badly as we do.

Looking forward with Cal State Bakersfield head women's coach Pat Skehan:
San Diego has always been a great team to go against. They always give us a good meet, and we are usually lucky to come out of there with a win. I am expecting them to swim well, since they always swim well against us. Hopefully, we will rise to the occasion.

UC San Diego's Last Time Out:
Having just swam at UC Santa Barbara, the Tritons returned home to face another Division I opponent in UC Davis. The men lost 157-143 as the Tritons won seven events. UCSD won two relays and Devin Ancona, Evan Hsiao, Daniel Gordh and Tim Fuller won individual events. On the women's side, UCSD won four events in a 174-126 loss. UCSD's 200 medley relay team edged UCD's, Susan Bell won the 100 back, Emily Harlan won the 50 free and Heather Szmidt won the 100 fly.

On the men's side, Ancona, Hsiao, Jesse Marin and Fuller won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:33.63. Ancona won the 100 back in 52.96, while Fuller won the 100 free at 45.52. Hsiao won the 100 breast in 58.16, while Gordh won both diving events. The Tritons closed the day with a first-place finish in the 400 free relay (Ancona, Daniel Perdew, Todd Langland, Fuller) with a time of 3:07.69.

The UCSD women won the 200 medley relay as Bell, Kendall Bohn, Szmidt and Harlan finished with a time of 1:47.54. Bell also won the 100 back in 59.01, while Harlan won the 50 free in 24.23. Additionally, Szmidt took top honors in the 100 fly in 59.05. Bell led a Triton sweep in the 200 back as she finished with a time of 2:08.14.

Looking forward with UCSD head coach Scott McGihon:
We are coming off a tough weekend of meets, falling to Division I opponents UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis. We are looking to rebound against an always tough opponent in Cal State Bakersfield, who is in its first year of transition to Division I. The men's meet will find UCSD competing against a team that was perennially one of the top-two teams at the Division II NCAA's. Three years ago, UCSD earned its first dual meet victory against CSUB in school history, and the competition has been fierce ever since. The women's meet will find us vying against a team that has been an annual top-10 program at the Division II NCAA's, and is the former home of Loni Burton, four-time NCAA Swimmer of the Year.
