McDaniel College vs. Washington College

WESTMINSTER, Maryland, February 9. SENIOR Megan Morse (Easton, MD/Sts. Peter & Paul) and sophomore Kathy Gerhart (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) each won two individual events as the Washington College swim team improved to 11-1 overall and 5-1 in Centennial Conference meets with a 69-26 victory over host McDaniel College this afternoon. The Washington College men were victorious in their dual as well, winning by a score of 67-28. Washington's 200 medley relay team broke the pool record during
the meet. The Shoremen improved to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in conference meets
with the win.

Morse won the 50 freestyle in a Washington College season-best time of
25.19, moving her up to the fourth-fastest swimmer ever in school history
in that event. She also won the 500 freestyle in 5:23.82. Gerhart captured
the 200 individual medley in 2:19.74 and the 100 freestyle in 57.15.

Senior Nicole Stanton (Columbia, MD/Hammond) won the 200 freestyle in
2:04.86 and was second in the 100 freestyle in 57.16. Freshman Laura
Lazenby (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth) won the 1000 freestyle (11:31.10), junior
Kimber Shoemaker (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) captured the 100 backstroke
(1:06.06), and sophomore Liz Thomas (Towson, MD/Notre Dame Prep) won the
100 breaststroke (1:11.97). Sophomore Amy Smith (Phoenixville,
PA/Phoenixville Area), Thomas, Gerhart, and Morse won the 200 medley relay
in 1:56.38.

Senior Nicole Ludwig (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) finished second in both the
200 individual medley (2:26.37) and the 100 breaststroke (1:14.60), while
junior Brittany Siburt (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) was second in the
1000 freestyle (11:35.87), sophomore Cailin Eisele (Egg Harbor Township,
NJ/Egg Harbor Township) placed second in the 100 butterfly (1:03.71), and
Smith was second in the 500 freestyle (5:33.46).

Swimming as an exhibition, Eisele, Smith, junior Rebecca Lee (Haddonfield,
NJ/Haddonfield), and Stanton turned in the fastest time in the 200
freestyle relay, finishing in 1:48.75.

The men were led by freshman Matt Violette (Westbrook, ME/Westbrook) and
sophomore Chris Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield), who each won two
individual events.

Violette won the 200 freestyle in 1:53.66 and the 100 backstroke in 57.18.
Soper took the 50 freestyle in a Washington College season-best time of
22.19 to become the Shoremen's ninth-fastest swimmer ever in that event.
Soper also won the 100 freestyle in 49.93 and swam the freestyle leg of
the winning and pool-record setting 200 medley relay. Senior Brandon
Becker (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks East), senior Alex Thomas (Towson,
MD/Calvert Hall), and sophomore Dylan Pollock (Savannah, GA/Benedictine
Military) joined Soper in the record-setting relay as they finished in a
time of 1:41.47.

Thomas added a first-place finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:07.04
and a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in a WC season-best time
of 1:00.93. Pollock was first in the 100 butterfly in 54.50 and second in
the 500 freestyle in 5:26.27, while junior Dan Wentzel (Exton,
PA/Henderson) won the 500 freestyle in 5:16.29 and was second in the 1000
freestyle in 10:45.66.

Wentzel, senior Eddie Raleigh (Hanover, PA/Southwestern), freshman Tim
Beadell (Timonium, MD/Loyola Blakefield), and Violette won the 200
freestyle relay in 1:33.98. Raleigh added a second-place finish in the 200
freestyle (1:56.11), while Becker was second in the 100 backstroke
(1:00.40).

Washington College returns to action Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m.
Centennial Conference home meet against Swarthmore.
