Marshall Hosts Xavier and West Virginia Wesleyan

HUNTINGTON, West Virginia, October 14. THE Xavier University swimming team began its 2006-07 season Friday evening at Marshall University. XU was second in the women's tri-meet between Marshall and West Virginia Wesleyan, while the men defeated WVWU in a dual meet. Jill Cooke and Elaina Suba each posted a pair of first-place victories for the Musketeers.

Cooke won the 500 Free as the Musketeers took the top three places in the event. Cooke finished in 5:18.64, followed closely by teammates Bridget Benner and Nicole Bujold. Suba won the 100 Free with a time of 55.59, just edging Dana Hunter (55.62) in the event. Cooke, Suba and Hunter teamed with Lindsay Jackson to win the 200 Free Relay in a time of 1:41.84.

Mary Catherine Mahon was XU's took gold in the 200 Back in 2:10.26, while Krystel Kooyman led the Musketeers to the top four spots in the 200 Breast in a time of 2:28.36. Jill Winhusen was the silver medalist in the 200 Fly in a time of 2:13.29.

On the men's side, Dave Janszen won the 200 Free in 1:47.53. XU took the top three spots in the event as Janszen was followed by Nico Lilly (1:48.62) and Shane Jenkins (1:50.65). Matt Krouse took gold in the 50 Free with a time of 22.15. Jake Burke was the run-away winner in the 200 IM, finishing six seconds clear of the field in 2:02.21.

Mark Febus won the 100 Free in a time of 49.03. Lilly was the gold medalist in the 500 Free (4:50.88) and Matt Marcus won the 200 Breast (2:21.32).
