Marist Hosts Army, Syracuse in Red Fox Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York, October 20. THE Marist Women's Swimming and Diving team opens the 2006-07 season in pursuit of the program's fourth straight MAAC Championships. The quest began on Friday when the Red Foxes hosted Army and Syracuse on Day One of the Red Fox Invitational.

Marist began the day by finishing in fourth place in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Ashley Papuga, Cindy Spiecker, Lyndsay Martin and Kim Koehler swam to a time of 4:12.78.

The Red Foxes went two, three in the 1,000-yard freestyle, as Catherine Hartford led the way in a time of 10:54.34. She was followed by Jennifer Silva who posted a time of 11:05.97.

In the 200-yard individual medley, Marist put three in the top ten, led by junior Jamie Falco who clocked in at 2:09.25. She was followed by Savannah Puca in fifth and Sandra Bujalski in seventh, who showed times of 2:13.34 and 2:14.06, respectively.

Marist closed out the swimming portion of Friday's meet by taking the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Koehler, Victoria Fresolone, freshmen Jenell Walsh-Thomas and Jenny Serino bested the field in a time of 1:40.42.

In diving action, Marist placed three of its divers in the top six in the 1-meter event. Melissa Mangona led the charge by finishing second with a point total of 250.35. She was followed by Anna Sanner in fourth place with 217.35 points and Rachel Cuyler in sixth with 160.45 points. Katherine Carpenter rounded out the Marist field in eighth place with a total of 151.35.

Marist will be back in the water tomorrow morning, as the invitational will continue at 9:30 a.m.
