Maria Lenk Trophy: Kristel Kobrich, Gabriella Silva, Cesar Cielo Drop South American Records

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, May 8. ANOTHER morning finals session, another run of South American records at the Maria Lenk Trophy.

Kristel Kobrich opened the morning final session with a South American record of 4:11.83 in the women's 400 free. That effort wiped out the previous standard of 4:12.21 set by Brazil's Monique Ferreira at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Meanwhile, Joanna Maranhao placed second in 4:12.19 to earn the Brazilian record, clipping Ferreira's time from Beijing. Ferreira completed the top three with a 4:13.62.

Gabriella Silva matched her preliminary South American record of 26.18 for the win in the women's 50 fly finale. Paula Ferreira took second in 26.42, while Nathalia dos Santos wound up third in 27.17.

Cesar Cielo and Nicholas dos Santos put on a show in the men's 50 fly as both cleared the South American record of 23.46 set by Guilherme Roth during prelims last night. Cielo edged dos Santos in the finale, 23.42 to 23.43. Roth finished third in 23.64.

Conrado Chede walked away with the men's 400 free with a time of 3:52.64, while Felipe Araujo took second in 3:53.27. Leonardo Alves Santos touched just behind with a third-place 3:53.57.

After setting the South American record during prelims last night with a 2:12.32, Fernanda Alvarenga settled for the win in the women's 200 back with a 2:13.26. Rebeca Bretanha placed second in 2:18.84, while Lorena Rezenda finished third in 2:19.33.

In the men's 200 back, Fernando Santos cleared 2:00 with a winning time of 1:59.98, while Leonardo Guedes finished second in 2:00.10. Lucas Salatta touched a close third in 2:00.11.
