Maria Lenk Brazil Trials: South American Record Book Torched

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, May 10. SWIMMERS hit their stride at the Maria Lenk Brazil Trials as South American records fell at a high rate throughout the day.

Liliane Guiscardo took down the South American record in the women's 50 breast with a time of 32.37 to start the day.

Fabiola Molina, Tatiane Sakemi, Gabriela Silva and Tatiana Barbosa shot down the South American record in the women's 400 medley relay with a time of 4:04.88.

Meanwhile, Joanna Maranhao notched a meet record with a time of 2:11.92 in the women's 200 fly. Her time fell short of the Olympic A cut, but easily cleared the B cut. Juan Pereyra later followed up with a meet record of his own in the men's 800 free when he clocked an 8:03.87.

During preliminary action, Felipe Lima set the South American record in the men's 50 breast with a time of 27.58. Additionally, Kaio Almeida did the same in the men's 200 fly with a time of 1:55.14.

Lima, however, finished second during finals with a time of 27.90, while Felipe Silva won in 27.88. Almeida, however, had no peer in the men's 200 fly when he won in 1:55.72 for the Olympic A cut. Lucas Salatta just missed the A cut time of 1:57.67 with a second-place 1:57.85.

Poliana Okimoto crushed the women's 1500 free field with a time of 16:36.23 for the triumph.

In relay action, Thiago Pereira, Thiago Parravicini, Gabriel Mangabeira and Nicolas Oliveira won the men's 400 medley relay in 3:44.05.
