This week’s Performance Of The Week, sponsored by LumaLanes, goes to Jeremy Desplanches, who broke the Swiss national record in the 200 IM at the recent 2017 French National Championships. Touching in 1:57.40, Desplaches sliced a second off his existing national record and vaulted himself to fifth overall in the world.

This is actually the second time that Desplanches broke the Swiss national record in 2017, as he had brought it down to a 1:58.31 just last month at a meet in Amiens. His time from this week lowered the record nearly a whole other second and now makes him a legitimate contender for an individual medal in the event at next month’s World Championships.

With the absence of Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte in this event this summer, the opportunity for a medal in this event is wide open. Kosuke Hagino currently leads the world with a 1:56.01, followed closely by China’s Wang Shun in 1:56.19. But the next three, including Desplanches, are closely bunched at 1:56-high and 1:57, which should make for an exciting race this summer. Desplanches has never made a final at a major international meet, with his highest finish at a World Championships coming back in 2015. At that meet in Kazan,he made it to the semi-finals and finished 12th in 1:59.35.

Congratulations Jeremy Desplanches on earning Swimming World’s Performance of the Week!

Special Thanks to LumaLanes for sponsoring Swimming World’s Performance of the Week.
