Lucie Davis Claims Three Records at Oregon 1A-4A High School State Championships; Records Continued Falling in Oregon’s 5A and 6A High School State Championships

GRESHAM—Lucie Davis of Sweet Home succeeded in breaking three records during Saturday’s 1A-4A Oregon high school State Championships. Records continued falling in Oregon’s 5A and 6A high school state championships.

1A-4A

On the girls side, North Bend narrowly claimed first with 75 points, while Sweet Home finished second with 74.5. La Grande took third with 32 points.

The North Bend 200 medley relay team of Vianka Hoyer (28.20), Cassie Dallas (30.08), Alyssa Bennett (25.72) and Alyssa Monohon (25.75) succeeded in breaking St. Mary’s 2014 1A-4A record of 1:53.82. The girls first lowered it to a 1:51.64 in prelims before setting it at 1:49.75 in finals.

Lucie Davis of Sweet Home smashed the reigning record in the 500 free first in prelims with a 5:01.07 before posting a 4:59.12 in finals. Davis’ time replaces Rachel Heaney’s 2010 record of 5:04.14.

Davis (24.97, anchor) joined with teammates Lauren Yon (25.40), Jessica Coats (25.21) and Makayla Nelson (25.71) in breaking the 200 free relay record of 1:43.35 set in 2014 by St. Mary’s. The girls of Sweet Home first posted a 1:42.65 in prelims before turning in an impressive 1:41.29 in finals.

Sweet Home’s Yon (54.14), Coats (54.58), Nelson (55.15) and Davis (53.32) delivered another strong performance in the 400 free relay breaking Marist’s 2009 record of 3:42.93 with a swift 3:37.19. North Bend’s Hoyer (54.45), Dallas (54.13), Monohon (56.18) and Bennett (52.87) finished close behind with a 3:37.63.

On the boys side, Catlin Gabel finished first with 63 points, La Grande took second with 46, and Sweet Home was third with 42 points.

The Catlin Gabel 200 medley relay team of Ethan Hanson (24.56), Tristan Furnary (29.24), Sid Pai (25.12) and Chris Junn (20.77) broke Cottage Grove’s 2012 record of 1:40.62 with a time of 1:39.69.

Junior Tristan Furnary, who led Catlin Furnary to a new record in the 200 medley relay, lowered the 200 IM 1A-4A record to 1:50.65. This replaces Aaron Ghiglieri’s 2012 record of 1:51.15.

Furnary also qualifed for an AA-C cut in the 100 free with a time of 45.84. The junior was just .49 off the 1A-4A record of 45.35.

Sweet Home (3:25.33) and La Grande (3:25.46) raced to a close finish in the 400 free relay, a full five seconds ahead of the competition.

2014 Oregon 1A-4A High School State Championships – Results

On the girls side, Bend took first with 74 points while Summit finished in a close second with 72. Mountain View rounded out the top three with 42 points.

Merritt Allen of Summit succeeded in breaking Hannah Gupton’s 2014 100 fly 5A record twice over the course of the weekend. The junior first broke the record of 57.14 in prelims with a 57.10 before posting a 56.35 in finals. Jennifer Robeson of Bend finished close behind in 56.83.

Mackenzie Halligan of Summit qualified for an AA-C cut in the 500 free after finishing in 4:54.98. The senior was only .16 seconds off Jessie James 2011 5A record of 4:54.82.

The Summit 200 free relay team of Gianna Belza (25.76), Allen (24.61), Alison Epple (24.54) and Halligan (24.06) succeeded in breaking the 5A record with a 1:38.97. Their time replaces Crescent Valley’s 2009 time of 1:40.82.

Elliyana Ferrin of Bend high school posted a 55.98 in the 100 back earning her first and an AA-C qualifying cut.

On the boys side, Summit prevailed with 74 points, Bend took second with 65, and Corvallis finished third with 37.

The Summit 200 medley relay team of John Hartmeier (24.04), Taj Mercer (28.81), Tommy Brewer (22.12) and Baxter Halligan (22.53) opened the meet with a record breaking 1:37.50. Their time took down the former 2009 5A record of 1:38.50 also held by Summit.

Tommy Brewer narrowly missed the 5A record in the 50 free. He posted a 20.85 putting him .05 short of his own 2014 record. His time earned him an AA-C qualifying cut.

Summit’s John Hartmeier sailed to an AA-C qualifying time of 50.81 in the 100 back also earning himself a first place finish.

Brewer was able to lower his 2013 5A record in the 100 breaststroke from 56.34 to a 56.22. He also qualified for an AA cut.

The Summit boys concluded the meet with a strong 400 free relay. Hartmeier (47.85), Jeremy Moon (50.89), Halligan (49.22) and Brewer (45.09) soared to a 3:13.05 finish. This time replaces Hillsboro’s 2009 5A record of 3:14.43.

2015 Oregon 5A High School State Championships – Results

On the girls side, Century claimed first with 151.5 points. Sunset was second with 143.5, and Jesuit rounded out the top three with 133.

West Salem’s Mackenzie Rumrill dashed to a new 6A and OSAA record in the 200 IM. Her time of 2:00.62 smashed Blaise Wittenauer Lee’s 2013 6A record of 2:03.24 and replaced Alisa Schuknecht’s 1999 OSAA record of 2:02.60.

Rumrill was back in the 100 fly posting a swift time of 53.57 to qualify for an AA cut. Lainey Visscher (54.10) of Clackamas and Sara Metzsch (54.53) of Century joined her for AA cuts.

Centennial sophomore Jamie Stone lowered her own 6A and OSAA records in the 100 free from 49.96 to 49.95. Coincidentally she also qualified for an AA cut. Robin Pinger (50.53) of West Linn joined her for an AA cut.

The 100 back proved to be an exciting event with Sara Metzsch of Century and Lainey Visscher of Clackamas thundering to a record-breaking tie. Their times of 54.78 replace Michelle Cefal’s 2013 6A and OSAA records of 54.81. The two also qualified for AA cuts.

Pinger succeeded in shattering the 6A and OSAA records in the 100 breaststroke. Her time of 1:02.32 replaces Prudence Rooker’s 2014 6A record of 1:03.34 and Felicia Casteneda’s 2004 OSAA time of 1:02.62.

Century’s Sara Metzsch (50.63), Riley Neal (53.59), Logan Neal (53.40) and Ellie Thornbrue (51.05) successfully broke their own record of 3:29.95 with a swift 3:28.67. All but one member of the relay team were on last year’s record breaking team. Their relay also qualified for an AA cut.

On the boys side, Jesuit took gold with 169 points while Oregon City claimed second with 101. Sunset finished third with 87.

Century’s Liam Metzsch claimed first in the 50 free with a qualifying AA cut of 20.85. He also grabbed first in the 100 free in 45.72 qualifying for an AA-C cut.

Lake Oswego’s Edward Kang (50.25) and Barlow’s Sergei Pereverzin (50.47) each swam their way to an AA-C cut in the 100 fly. Pereverzin also claimed an AA-C cut and first place in the 100 back with a time of 50.00.

Jesuit’s Anthony Nosack and South Salem’s Carter Garfield kept it close in the 100 breaststroke. In the end Nosack’s 57.37 won out over Garfield’s 57.59. Both swims qualified for AA-C cuts.

Michelle Cefal is now a Tennessee Volunteer and went a pr 53.92 in the 100 back @ SECs a couple of days ago.
