Litzinger Claims Career Number 100 as Utah Downs UNLV, 142-120

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, November 4. THE University of Utah women's swimming and diving team knocked off UNLV on Saturday 142-120, while the Ute men fell to the Rebels 166-115. The win on the women's side marked number one for the season in the Mountain West Conference race and number 100 career for head coach Michael Litzinger in his women's coaching tenure.

On the women's side, Utah needed to finish the final event with a finish of first, third and fifth and was able to do that in the 200 IM to get the victory at UNLV. Alison McInturff won three events including the 200 free (1:51.62), 100 free (52.31) and the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.56 to give the Utes the needed boost down the stretch to hold off the Rebels. Utah also notched a big victory in the 200 fly as Jennifer Fredsall won the event with a time of 2:08.40. Michelle Blair and Kelly McIntyre finished second and third respectively in the event. In the 200 back Shannon McQueen and Marissa Martin finished first and second which proved to be big in the meet where the final two events determined the winner. "This was as exciting of a dual meet as I have been involved in during my seven years of coaching," states Litzinger. "UNLV came ready and our women responded very well tonight. It was a great meet."

The men's team was unable to win very many events, as Seamus Alger was the lone swimmer to win an event. Alger won the 200 fly with a time of 1:52.74. "The guys did a great job competing today and I was very pleased with the way that they swam," adds Litzinger.

For Litzinger the win marks career victory number 100. He got his start at St. Bonaventure in 1989 where he coached for nine seasons and garnered three conference titles and 53 victories. In that time he was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 1996 and 1997 and Eastern Intercollegiate Coach of the Year in 1992 and 1994. The victory at UNLV marked victory number 47 in his tenure at Utah where he has lost only three women's meets over the last three seasons, going 27-3 over that time. "UNLV really tested our girls today and it was a great way to get win number 100 for me," comments Litzinger.
