Liberty Posts Seven Event Wins to Claim Washington 2A Swimming and Diving Title

FEDERAL WAY – The Liberty High School girls’ swimming and diving team won seven of the 12 events contested to run away with the Washington 2A Swimming and Diving title on Nov. 15 at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. Liberty posted 348 points to top Sehome (188 points) and Archbishop Murphy (182 points) for the team title.

Liberty kicked off their run to the state title with a meet record in the 200 medley relay, as Lauryn Hepp, Abby Russell, Cecilia Nelson and Sydney Hartford posted a 1:51.40 to lower Squalicum’s 2011 standard of 1:51.89. Ellensburg’s foursome of Krista Wilson, Taylor Wilson, Alicia Hummel and Sam Denison just out-touched Pullman’s Taylor McCoy, Cournti Larsen, Rose Jao and Caroline Brock for second, 1:54.23 to 1:54.26.

Minutes after swimming on the winning medley relay, Liberty’s Cecilia Nelson got back in the pool for the 200 free final, cruising to victory in 1:56.47. Her teammate, Ellie Hohensinner, tracked down second in 1:57.88, just ahead of Naches Valley’s Ella Van Troba (1:58.21).

Pullman’s Taylor McCoy topped the 200 IM final by four and a half seconds, stopping the clock in 2:06.92 to out-distance Klahowya’s Kelsey Crane (2:11.46) and Liberty’s Abby Russell (2:11.84) for the title.

Liberty picked up its third win in four events in the 50 free as Mackenna Briggs rocketed to a 23.78, the only swim under 24 of the meet. Danielle Booth of Archbishop Murphy secured second in 24.34, while Ellensburg’s Taylor Wilson got to the wall third in 24.59.

Reilly Krueger of Archbishop Murphy topped the 1-meter diving competition with 350.95 points, just holding off Highline’s Sophia Cassam, who scored 338.05 points to finish second. Sammamish’s McKenna Troje held on for third with 328.20 points.

Mackenna Briggs of Liberty picked up her second individual state title of the meet, setting a new meet record in the 100 fly with a 55.65. That dipped under Julia Sanders’ 2011 meet record of 56.29. Ellensburg’s Taylor Wilson earned another podium finish with her 57.40 for second, while Liberty’s Cecilia Nelson claimed third in 59.35.

Cheney’s Makenzie Norman broke 54 to win the 100 free over Ellensburg freshman Krista Wilson, 53.31 to 54.09. Squalicum got back on the podium as Serena Allendorfer, who actually qualified first in prelims at 53.97, wound up third in finals in 54.26.

After qualifying first for the 500 free by 10 seconds, Liberty’s Ellie Hohensinner held off Naches Valley’s Ella Van Troba in finals, 5:08.36 to 5:10.79. Pullman’s Caroline Brock dropped almost five seconds from her prelim time to take third in 5:20.64.

Liberty took home the girls’ 200 free relay title in 1:41.23, thanks to Mackenna Briggs, Ellie Hohensinner, Abby Russell and Sydney Hartford. Archbishop Murphy took second, with Caitlin Mitchell, Caroline Kowalchuk, Kaelee McCloskey and Danielle Booth posting a 1:42.86. Sehome’s Sophie Grambo, Gwendolyn Roley, Leah Day and Hannah Holmgren wrapped up third with a 1:43.44.

Taylor McCoy of Pullman added a win in the 100 back to her victory in the 200 IM earlier, clocking a 56.95 to demolish the rest of the championship final. Liberty’s Lauryn Hepp touched almost three seconds behind in 59.69, while Klahowya’s Kira Crane took third in 1:01.25.

The final of the 100 breast came down to the last few yards, as Fife’s Meredith Sawer and Archbishop Murphy’s Danielle Booth treated the crowd to a great race. After turning .04 ahead of Sawer at the 50, Booth held on for the win by the same amount, 1:05.64 to 1:05.68. Port Angeles’ Jaine Macias rounded out the top three in 1:07.34.

Liberty capped their meet with a win and meet record in the 400 free relay. Mackenna Briggs, Ellie Hohensinner, Cecilia Nelson and Lauryn Hepp clocked in at 3:37.43 to lower Tumwater’s 2012 record of 3:40.87 by more than three seconds. Ellensburg’s Krista Wilson, Sam Denison, Alicia Hummel and Taylor Wilson finished almost seven seconds behind in 3:44.30, followed by Pullman’s Rose Jao, Rachel Sun, Caroline Brock and Taylor McCoy in 3:46.16.
