Kylie Masse Breaks 100 Back Canadian Record, Moves to Fifth All-Time During First Prelims at Trials
During the first session of the Canadian Swimming Trials in Victoria, backstroker Kylie Masse blasted a new Canadian record in the women’s 100 back and improved to fifth all-time in the event. Meanwhile, two big names were disqualified in the prelims of the women’s 200 breast, although one of those DQs was later overturned.
Masse posted a time of 58.42 to top prelims of her signature event, beating out her own Canadian record of 58.66 set at the Olympic Games last summer on a relay leadoff. Masse had previously tied for the bronze medal in the 100 back, but her prelims time here moves her past Olympic gold medalist Katinka Hosszu (58.45) into fifth all-time in the event.
The only swimmers that have ever been quicker than Masse’s time are Gemma Spofforth (58.12), Anastasia Zueva (58.18), Emily Seebohm (58.23) and Missy Franklin (58.33). Masse will try to move up that list in finals, where she will be seeded first by more than two seconds ahead of Hilary Caldwell (1:00.62) and Dominique Bouchard (1:00.74).

In the women’s 200 breast, Olympic finalist Kierra Smith led the way into the finals with her time of 2:25.96, just ahead of Ashley McGregor (2:26.47). Kelsey Wog, the World Short Course silver medalist in the event, was originally DQed but was later reinstated, so she ended up with the third seed in 2:28.53.
Wog was not the only big name to be DQed, but the other swimmer was not so fortunate to have the DQ overturned. Sydney Pickrem finished in 2:26.26, which wold have been the No. 2 time of the morning, but she was called for a stroke infraction that nullified her swim. Pickrem, however, will be favored to make the World Championships team later in the meet in both IM events.

Ruck, meanwhile, barely got into the final, finishing eighth in 2:00.19. Mackenzie Padington (1:58.39) and Kayla Noelle Sanchez (1:58.44) will join Savard in the middle lanes in the final.
