Kutztown Quad

BLOOMSBURG, Pennsylvania, November 6. THE Kutztown University women's swimming team won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) quad meet at Bloomsburg University Saturday afternoon. In the dual meets, the Golden Bears defeated Mansfield 218-38, Edinboro 183.5-78.5, and Bloomsburg 133.5-128.5.

KU extended its dual meet winning streak to 20. The Golden Bears last defeat was to West Chester in Oct. 2009.

"This was the wildest meet I've ever seen," head women's swimming coach Tim Flannery said of KU's close victory over Bloomsburg. "It was close the whole meet."

The juniors had a big day for KU as Jordan Shapiro , Alexandra Crigler , Lauren Malloy , and Jess Mape all had first place finishes. Shapiro claimed victories in the 100-yard backstroke (1 minute, .61 seconds), 50-yard freestyle (25.08), and the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.66). Crigler won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:51.42) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:19.46). Malloy won the 200-yard free (1:58.90). Mape won the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.80).

Sophomore Lauren Galetto was the winner in the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.94). Malloy followed closely, finishing in third (2:16.29). Malloy had a close call in the 100 yard butterfly and finished second (1:01.74)

In the last couple of events Kutztown's efforts in the 200 yard individual medley from sophomores Zoe Sianis and Lauren Piorkowski helped give the Golden Bears the edge over their opponents.

"Our third and fourth place finishes helped KU's team efforts," Flannery said. "The last events and our high finishes put us in position to win the meet."

Kutztown finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:41.49). The relay team consisted of junior Nicole Hinsdale , senior Allison Sheely, Shapiro, and Malloy.

Also contributing to Kutztown's victory was senior Kerry Choplin finishing second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:57.25) and 500-yard freestyle (5:20.60), and third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.72). Sheely finished third in the 100-yard freestyle (56.29).

Freshman Elizabeth Metz finished fourth in the 1000-yard free (11:05.55) and 500-yard freestlye (5:24.98). In the 100-yard breaststroke, Mape finished second (1:10.17), and freshman Natalie Carr was fourth (1:10.66).

As the Golden Bears continue to ride on the momentum wave, they still know that more work has to be done. KU will be preparing for the annual Golden Bear Invitational that will take place Nov. 19 & 20 at Keystone Pool.
