Kutch, Saunderson Break Records On Night Three of CAA Championships

Drexel’s Alexa Kutch and Towson’s Jack Saunderson each broke a record to highlight night three of the 2017 men and women’s CAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

2017 CAA Championships Day 3 Finals – Results

Women’s 400 IM:

James Madison’s Claire Adkins opened the meet with a win in the women’s 400 IM. The senior stopped the clock in 4:19.54, nearly two seconds ahead of the field and just off the NCAA B standard.

Towson’s Ashley Illenye took second in 4:21.30 while James Madison’s Maddie Massey finished a close third in 4:21.70.

Men’s 400 IM:

Three freshman grabbed gold, silver, and bronze in the men’s 400 IM. William and Mary’s Chris Balbo was the first of the rookies to finish, touching the wall in 3:49.46 for his first CAA individual medal.

Balbo’s teammate Ben Skopic finished second in 3:50.90 and Drexel’s Jason Arthur took third in 3:53.20.

Women’s 100 Fly:

Northeastern’s Sara Touchette-McGowan, who finished second in this event last year, won in a close women’s 100 fly race. The junior posted a time of 54.06 for the win.

William and Mary’s Abby Mack touched second in 54.18 while Delaware’s Mina Feyrer took third in 55.20.

Men’s 100 Fly:

Towson’s Jack Saunderson, who finished third in last night’s 200 IM, dominated the men’s 100 fly. Although the sophomore broke both the meet and league record this morning during prelims, his final time of 47.01 broke them again. The previous records stood since 2009.

Drexel’s JT Lumpkin finished second in 48.48 and William and Mary’s Evan Baker took a close third in 48.51.

Women’s 200 Free:

Last night’s 50 free winner Jaimie Miller proved she could sprint a longer distance after winning the women’s 200 free title. The William and Mary senior used a strong last 50 to take the title in 1:47.87.

James Madison’s Bonnie Zhang took a close second in 1:48.00 while her teammate Shannon Harper finished third in 1:49.72.

Men’s 200 Free:

After finishing fourth in last night’s 50 free, Joseph Eiden made his way to the top of the podium in the men’s 200 free. The William and Mary senior posted a time of 1:38.28 to win by half a second.

Drexel’s Ivo Pejovic swam to second place in 1:38.75 while his teammate Luke Hanner took third in 1:38.87.

Women’s 100 Breast:

Drexel’s Rachel Bernhardt successfully defended her title in the women’s 100 breast. Last year’s CAA Women’s Swimmer of the Year touched the wall in 1:00.37, nearly two seconds ahead of the field.

James Madison’s Katie Parker took second in 1:02.04 and her teammate Megan Marsh finished a close third in 1:02.34.

Men’s 100 Breast:

Joseph Brown won the men’s 100 breast en route to claiming his first CAA title. The Drexel sophomore finished with a time of 55.10.

William and Mary’s Josh Zimmt took second in 55.48 and Drexel’s Ralph Cannarozzi III finished third in 55.69.

Women’s 100 Back:

The top two swimmers were under the previous meet record, but the title ultimately went to Drexel’s Alexa Kutch. The freshman won the women’s 100 back in 53.25, only .08 off the league record.

Towson’s Jacy Icard took a close second in 53.43 and William and Mary’s Sophie Rittenhouse took third in 54.14.

After finishing fifth in this event last year, UNCW’s Tad Spence cruised to first in the men’s 100 back final tonight. The senior stopped the clock in 48.17 for his first CAA individual title.

Towson’s Dominic Breschi was second in 48.55 and William and Mary’s Alex Henderson finished third in 48.87.

Women’s 1m Diving:

James Madison’s Olivia Lehman swept both diving events this weekend after winning the 1m diving event tonight. The senior posted a score of 298.80. This is the second-straight 1m title for the 2016 CAA Diver of the Year.

Drexel’s Madison Kramer dove to second with 288.10 points and James Madison’s Carlyn McNeely finished third with a score of 270.30.

Men’s 400 Medley Relay:

Drexel concluded day three of the meet with a win in the men’s 400 medley relay. The team of Jason Arthur (47.98), Joseph Brown (54.76), Lumpkin (47.90), and Pejovic (43.73) won in 3:14.37.

Towson took second in 3:15.14 and William and Mary finished third in 3:15.37.
