Kieran Smith, Julie Meynen Named SEC Swimmers of the Week

Kieran Smith and Julie Meynen were honored by the Southeastern Conference as swimmers of the week for their efforts last week against Minnesota and the SMU Classic respectively. Florida’s Alex FarrowEric Friese and Ashley McCool were also honored by the conference as Farrow and McCool were announced as divers of the week and Friese as freshman of the week. Kentucky’s Caitlin Brooks was also named women’s freshman of the week.

Men’s Swimmer of the Week: Kieran Smith, Florida

Florida’s Kieran Smith, a sophomore from Ridgefield, Conn., won two individual events in Florida’s win at Minnesota (178.5-116.5). Smith posted a B-cut time in the 200 free of 1:35.13, the second fastest time in the nation. He also earned first place in the 100 free with a time of 44.07, tying for the third best time in the nation in the event. His exhibition time of 1:47.27 in the 200 IM is the third fastest time in the nation.

Men’s Diver of the Week: Alex Farrow, Florida

Florida’s Alex Farrow, a senior from Naples, Fla., finished second in the 1-meter springboard with a score of 328.08, the top score in the conference this season in the event. Farrow finished fourth in the 3-meter with a score of 318.38 in Florida’s win at Minnesota.

Men’s Freshman of the Week: Eric Friese, Florida

Florida’s Eric Friese, a freshman from Potsdam, Germany, won two individual events in the Gators’ win at Minnesota. Friese placed first in the 50 free with a time of 20.42, the 15th fastest time in the nation. He also touched the wall first in the 100 fly with a time of 48.46, the 13th fastest time in the nation.

Women’s Swimmer of the Week: Julie Meynen, Auburn

Auburn’s Julie Meynen, a senior from Luxembourg, posted the fastest times in the nation in both the 50 free (22.05) and 100 free (48.20) at the SMU Women’s Classic. Meynen was also a part of the first-place 200 free relay and 800 free relay for the Tigers.

Women’s Diver of the Week: Ashley McCool, Florida

Florida’s Ashley McCool, a junior from Cochrane, Alberta, Canada, swept the springboards events in the Gators’ win at No. 18 Minnesota. McCool placed first in the 1-meter with a score of 305.85 and in the 3-meter with a score of 338.40.

Women’s Freshman of the Week: Caitlin Brooks, Kentucky

Kentucky’s Caitlin Brooks, a freshman from Gainesville, Fla., helped No. 19 UK defeat No. 9 Indiana for the first time since 2007 and top No. 16 Notre Dame in a tri-meet in Lexington. Brooks took the top spot in the 100 back with a time of 54.20, the 14th fastest time in the nation. She also placed second in the 200 back behind teammate Asia Seidt with her time of 1:57.24, the 10th fastest time in the nation. Brooks helped UK earn first place in the first event of the tri-meet, leading off the 200 medley relay (25.20).
