Katie Grimes Tops 400 IM Prelims at Austin Juniors; Elite Women’s 200 Free Final Set

Prior to this summer’s Olympic Trials, Katie Grimes considered the 400 IM her best event, and she had a long course entry time of 4:41.39 before faltering in prelims of the event in Omaha. Of course, she would go on to make a name for herself in the distance events, finishing a close third in the 1500 free and then qualifying for the Olympic team in the 800 free, but she appears set to pop a big swim in the 400 IM final at Junior Nationals in Austin.

Grimes, representing Sandpipers of Nevada, finished first in prelims of the event in 4:07.17. That was about a second off her lifetime best of 4:06.24, and it would be no surprise to see Grimes in the 4:02-range or better in the final after she cut more than four seconds off her 500 free lifetime best Thursday. Justina Kozan finished second in prelims in 4:12.11, but the Olympic Trials finalist in the 400-meter IM has a best time of 4:05.67. Fort Collins’ Lucy Bell was third in 4:13.86.

The women’s 200 free projects as one of the races of the meet with four big-name swimmers claiming the top four spots in the final and four other swimmers crushing their best times to qualify behind them. This field was so quick that seven of the eight beat the top time in prelims at the Greensboro Juniors meet. Bella Sims, another Sandpipers swimmer who was an 800 free relay Olympian for the U.S., qualified first in 1:44.31. Sims previously held off Grimes to win the 500 free in Austin.

Second went to Fox Valley Park’s Leah Hayes in 1:44.69, and Hayes crushed her best time by more than two seconds as she looks to add to an earlier win in the 200 IM. Kozan was third in 1:45.71, and Grimes qualified fourth in 1:45.83. Expect some quick times when these four face off at night.
