Kansas vs. Arizona State

TEMPE, Arizona. October 17. SENIOR Maria Mayrovich and junior Emily Lanteigne each won two freestyle events as the Kansas swimming and diving team upended No. 16 Arizona State, 149-147, at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in the first dual meet for both schools.

The Jayhawks won four of the five freestyle events, as well as both diving events to score 149 points in the meet. In the final event, KU placed second and third in the 200 yard free relay to score six points clinch its first victory of the season.

"This was really big victory for our program," Kansas head coach Clark Campbell said. "We capitalized in some key areas of the meet. Our divers did a tremendous job, and I thought our swimmers stepped up and had perhaps their best meet in the seven years I've been at Kansas. This was a great way to start the year."

Mayrovich earned event victories in the 50 free with a time of 23.48 and the 100 free with a time of 50.54, missing her fastest career time by less than a second in both cases. She also swam the anchor of KU's 200-yard medley relay and the first leg of the 200 freestyle relay teams, which both placed second in their events. In all, the senior had a hand in 26 of KU's 149 total points.

Lanteigne also helped score 26 points, swimming on both KU relay teams and winning the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events. The junior's time in the 200 freestyle was just two seconds off the pace of her fastest career time.

Divers Hannah McMacken and Erin Mertz captured first-place finishes in 1-meter and 3-meter diving, respectively. While junior Meghan Proehl placed second off the 3-meter board, and third off the 1-meter board as the Jayhawks scored 32 combined points in the two diving events.

Senior Danielle Herrmann also captured a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.55.
