Kansas Turns In 99-49 Win Over Northern Iowa

LAWRENCE, Kansas, November 4. THE Kansas swimming and diving team rallied to defeat the University of Northern Iowa Panthers, 99-49, in the final session of the two-day dual meet at Robinson Natatorium in front of an energized home crowd Saturday.

The dual meet featured nine events, two of which were relays. Kansas was victorious in both the 200-yard medley relay, which took place during the first session Friday, and the 200-yard freestyle relay, which launched day two of the dual.

The remaining seven events were categorized by stroke; sprint freestyle, distance freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, individual medley and diving. Each swimmer swam three events that correlated with their specific category and each category was scored with the winner as the high point of all three events.

The two-day dual meet was executed with an atypical order of events in order to prepare both teams for a championship meet format, similar to the format the Jayhawks will see when they travel to the Maryland Invitational in College Park, Md. Nov. 16-18.

Junior Lauren Bonfe was the high point of the backstroke events. Bonfe had a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.17, as well as the 50-yard backstroke (26.84). Bonfe finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.60), while senior captain Jenny Short clocked in at 2:04.49 in the event, good for a first place finish and a lifetime-best time.

Sophomore Danielle Herrmann swept all IM events, finishing first in the 200-yard IM (2:07.48) and the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:01.18. Herrmann's time in the 400-yard IM (4:31.28) was a season-best time. Herrmann was the high point in the individual medley block with a total of 18 points. Kansas won the IM category over UNI, 15-6.

"As a team, we're excited for Maryland," head coach Clark Campbell said. "We will be able to experience a college championship meet as a team. It's an opportunity for us to swim fast against teams that we never see in the Midwest and will serve as a dry run of Big 12's."
