Polish Radio is reporting that Matczak suffered serious head injuries following a fall while drunk.” The report further quotes doctors that there was not an altercation involved.

“From what we have seen, it's very likely that the patient was not beaten up, but just hit by a car,” Professor Wojciech Gaszynski told the Gazeta Wyborcza daily.

Matczak, who was scheduled to compete for an Olympic spot at Polish Trials next month, withdrew from the meet recently with no explanation. Matczak won the men's 400 -meter freestyle event at the 2006 Junior World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, and is now 23 years old.
