Junior Nationals East: Summer McIntosh Breaks Meet Record in First 500 Free Swim

The 2022 U.S. Junior Nationals East continued with Day 2 from Greensboro, North Carolina.

The events for Thursday’s prelims session included the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle for both the men and women.

Here is a look at how each event turned out at Junior Nationals East:

Junior Nationals East: Women’s 500 Freestyle

Canada teen sensation Summer McIntosh, swimming for the Sarasota Sharks, broke the meet record to win the 500 freestyle, leading off the session.

McIntosh was fastest in prelims to take the top seed in 4:34.15, cruising past the field by 10 seconds, a stunning swim for an athlete still getting used to short-course yards. In fact, this was her first official 500 freestyle swim.

Carmel’s Lynsey Bowen took second in 4:44.36, followed by Sarasota’s Michaela Mattes (4:45.15).

Junior Nationals East: Men’s 500 Freestyle

Henry McFadden of the Jersey Wahoos, 17, took the top seed in the men’s 500 free in 4:17.78 to start the men’s session from Greensboro.

Carmel’s Aaron Shackell, 18, took the second seed in 4:20.35, followed by SwimAtlanta’s Tristan DenBrok (4:21.08).

Women’s 200 IM

Carmel’s Alex Shackell, 16, took the top spot in the women’s 200 IM, couching the wall in 1:56.61, a second faster than her seed time.

Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics’ Sophia Umstead, 15, (1:58.69) took the second seed, dropping nearly two seconds from her seed time.

GSCY’s Emily Thompson took the third spot in 1:58.83, just three hundredths ahead of Carmel’s Molly Sweeney (1:58.86).

Junior Nationals East: Men’s 200 IM

Cavalier’s Thomas Heilman held off Daniel Diehl to take the top seed in the 200 IM, none of the most anticipated head-to-head battles of juniors on the men’s side.

Heilman touched the wall in 1:43.39 and will be right next to Diehl in the finals, who finished in 1:43.90.

Will Modglin took the third seed in 1:44.68.

Junior Nationals East: Women’s 50 Free

Carmel’s Alex Shackell turned right around after taking the top seed in the 200 IM and claimed the top seed in the 50 free. The 16-year-old touched the wall in 21.87, the third-fastest 15-16 time in history.

Erika Pelaez took the second spot in 22.02, followed by Annie Jia (22.64).

Junior Nationals East: Men’s 50 Free

GTAC’s Scotty Buff raced to the wall first in the men’s 50 free prelims. He touched the wall in 19.46, a tenth of a second drop from his seed time.

East Carolina’s Lucca Battaglini took the second seed in 19.76, tied with Brandon Whitfield.

Moglin took the fifth seed (19.86) after swimming the 200 IM.
