NEW COMMIT: Virginia Beach, Va. native and Junior National qualifier Ryan Hillery has announced his verbal commitment to Washington University of St. Louis and will arrive on campus in the fall of 2021.

He told Swimming World:

“I am honored to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Washington University in St Louis. I am blessed with the support of my family, friends, and coaches. Let’s go Bears?!!”

A versatile swimmer, Hillery trains year-round with Tide Swim Team and most recently picked up two best times at an August intrasquad meet. He placed sixth in the 400 IM at Virginia Seniors in March and notched a personal best at Juniors East in December. In summer 2019, he had a strong showing at Virginia LCM Seniors before going on to final in the 200m fly at Geneva Futures.

His best times include:

  • 100 fly – 51.21
  • 200 fly – 1:51.86
  • 200 IM – 1:55.37
  • 400 IM – 4:02.08
  • 200 free – 1:42.59
  • 500 free – 4:39.25

Also competing for Ocean Lakes High School, Hillery is a three-time Virginia Class 6 State Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American placed eighth in the 500 free and 11th in the 200 free as a junior while taking 13th in the former event during his sophomore season.

Hillery’s versatility will be a huge asset to the Bears next fall and he could find himself in a number of different events throughout his college career. His best time in the 200 fly is already fast enough to score in the B-final at the 2020 UAA Championships.
