NEW COMMIT: Junior National qualifier Evan O’Connell of Danville, Calif. has opted to remain in-state for his college career after committing to Cal Poly beginning in the fall of 2021.

He told Swimming World:

“I am thrilled to announce that I will study and swim for Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo for fall of 2021. I am grateful for the support of all of my coaches over the years. I can’t wait to get started with the Mustangs and train under Coach Phil Yoshida. Ride High!”

Primarily a butterflyer, O’Connell trains year-round with the Crow Canyon Country Club Sharks and most recently placed eighth in the 200m back and 13th in the 100m fly at the TYR 18&U Spring Cup in Irvine after earning three best times at the 18&U Winter Championships in December.

In July 2019, he had a great showing at Far Westerns where he posted a fifth-place showing in the 100m back and took sixth in the 200m IM.

His best times include:

  • 100 fly – 50.85
  • 200 IM – 1:54.91
  • 100 back – 51.76
  • 200 back – 1:50.72

Also competing for De La Salle High School, O’Connell finished 11th in the 100 back at the CIF North Coast Section Championships during his sophomore season. He has also served as team captain for the past two years.
