Diana Bates attends the Brearley School on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and is a nine-year member of Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics (AGUA) under head coach David Rodriguez. She holds three AGUA team records and one Metropolitan Swimming record.

Bates currently holds Winter Junior National time standards in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, 200 backstroke and 400 IM. This summer, she added a Summer Junior National cut to her resume in the 200 IM with runner-up honors in the event at the 2019 Senior Metropolitan Championships. She also placed third in the 200 back and sixth in the 400 IM.

Bates’ list of best times showcases her versatility, as she owns Futures cuts in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly as well. She finaled in both IM events at 2018’s Futures Championships before moving to Junior Nationals in 2019.

Out of the pool, Bates earned USA Swimming Scholastic All America Honors in both 2018 and 2019.

Diana Bates’ Best Times:

SCYLCM
100 Back57.821:05.86
200 Back2:02.762:19.70
100 Breast1:03.771:14.74
200 Breast2:18.232:43.49
100 Fly56.021:04.32
200 IM2:02.782:20.00
400 IM4:20.485:03.55

Bates’ versatility is a huge pickup for the Big Green. She can swim a range of events from sprint stroke to distance freestyle. Bates would have held the top Dartmouth 400 IM time in 2019, as well as the second-fastest 200. She would also hold the third spot in the 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 1,000 freestyle.

Bates would have placed ninth in the preliminaries of the 400 IM at the 2019 Ivy League Championships. She would have been seventeenth in the shorter IM, the event which led to her breakout summer. With one more year of training to go before heading to Hanover, Bates’ potential in the individual medleys should be of strong value to Dartmouth next winter.

Diana Bates told Swimming World:

I’m beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to the admissions process at Dartmouth College! Thank you to my friends, family, Coach David, Coach Diana, and Coach Jamie for all of their support throughout this process. I can’t wait to be part of such an amazing team…Go Big Green!!?
