NEW COMMIT: The University of Virginia has picked up their third early verbal commitment for the class of 2025 from Abby Kapeller of Greenwood, Minn. who will join Caroline Pennington and Reilly Tiltmann in Charlottesville at the start of the 2021-22 season.

Kapeller does her club swimming with Riptide and raced the 100m back at Phillips 66 Nationals this past summer before going on to finish seventh in that event at Junior Nationals. Last winter, she placed fifth in the 50 free and 16th in the 100 back at Juniors West and took fifth in both the 50 back and 50 fly at NCSAs. A current junior at Minnetonka High School, the NISCA All-American earned bronze in the 50 free at the Minnesota Class 2 Championships during her freshman year.

She told Swimming World:

“I can’t express how excited I am to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIS Thank you to my family, friends, coaches and dogs for the constant support in helping me get here! I’m so hyped to be able to be a part of such an amazing team of swimmers and coaches! GO HOOS! #wahoowa #shift2021”
In SCY, her best times include:
  • 50 free – 22.66
  • 100 free – 49.94
  • 50 back -2 4.81
  • 100 back – 54.03
  • 200 back – 1.58.79
  • 50 fly – 24.10
  • 100 fly – 54.45

In LCM, her best times include:

  • 50 free – 26.52
  • 100 free – 59.33
  • 50 back – 28.75
  • 100 back – 1.01.68 (Olympic Trials cut)
  • 200 back – 2.20.11
  • 50 fly – 27.90
  • 100 fly – 1.01.57

When she suits up for the Hoos at the start of the 2021-22 season, Kapeller will be a valuable asset both individually and on relays. Even with nearly two years of club swimming still to go, she would’ve placed in the C-final in the 50 free, 100 back, and 100 fly at the 2019 ACC Championships and is just shy of scoring range in the 100 free and 200 back.
