Less than a month after breaking two long course National Age Group Records in Plantation, Florida, FAST Swimming’s Joshua Zuchowski can add another 11&12 NAG Yards to his resume after winning the 200 IM at the 2017 Dolfin Elite Showcase Classic. The meet is currently taking place in Clearwater, Florida and will continue through Saturday, April 8th.

Zuchowski swam a 1:55.75, besting his competition by over ten seconds. The swim was also good enough to break the current NAG held by Chas Morton. Morton raced to a 1:56.61 in January of 1984.

Morton was a successful age group swimmer in the early to mid-eighties. His records have spanned years and withstood some of today’s greatest swimmers, including Michael Phelps. A successful butterflyer and IMer, Morton continues to hold one age group records today: 11-12 100 fly (51.85, 1984) Morton continued swimming throughout high school and college although without as noticeable of success as his younger years. Despite his successful career Morton never went on to swim on the national or Olympic teams.

Zuchowski had the following splits:

Fly – 26.20

Back- 28.67

Breast – 34.04

Free – 26.84

The swim bumped Zuchowski from third to first in the All-Time Top 100 Age Group rankings. Headed into this season, Zuchowski’s best was a 2:06.12 from this meet as an 11-year-old last year. He posted a 1:57.37 two weeks ago at the FG Junior Olympics before breaking the NAG tonight in Clearwater.

Morton ended up swimming for Stanford and had a fine collegiate career. In ’92 he went to Barcelona and won nine Olympic golds and set a dozen world records.

Well at least the first part of that statement about his educational endeavors is true! And he was an All- America for the Cardinal.

Wow. I thought about Chas Morton and his records just yesterday. And today he loses his next to last one. I remember seeing him set some of those records. Great swim Joshua!

Chas’ record was achieved with the old breaststroke and backstroke rules. Worth at least two seconds when comparing to today’s allowances for over-water arm recovery and head below water in breaststroke as well as no hand on the wall first backstroke turns.

Kudos to Josh and a tip of the hat to Chas for longevity of his records. They just show how good he was back in the day.

Well earned congratulations to Josh, but steve’s comments above about changes in rules, as well as equipment, facilities and swimwear are valid.

Please don’t go out of your way to minimize Chas’ accomplishments with faint praise (no national or olympic team) for his accomplishments as a post age-group swimmer. He did plenty.

At Stanford he was in the class of 1993, suggesting he was on NCAA championship teams in 1992 and 1993; in those years he won three Pac-10 individual championships with a meet record in 1992 in the 200 IM and wins in 1992 and 1993 in the 400 IM. Pretty good company.

It would be interesting for somebody to put some statistics together to come up with the (subjective) best male and female age grouper of all time. I would think Chas Morton and Grace Cornelius would have a fighting chance to be the winners.
