Jose Finkel Trophy Meet: Kristel Kobrich Sets South American Record

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, September 26. THE final day of short course meter racing at the Jose Finkel Trophy Meet produced another South American record.

Kristel Kobrich downed the South American record in the women's 1500 free with a winning effort of 15:51.44 to take the top-ranked time in the world as well. Melissa Gorman owned the previous best time in the early rankings with a 15:51.75 from June. Poliana Okimoto set the Brazilian record with a second-place 16:09.04, while Sarah Correa took third overall in 16:45.71.

Guilherme Guido turned in the first sub-51 second time in the men's 100 back this year with a top-ranked effort of 50.46. Guido previously stood second with a 51.44 from the World Cup stop in Rio, but jumped ahead of Ashley Delaney's previous top-ranked time of 51.41 from July. Randall Bal of the U.S. took second in 51.19, now taking second in the early world rankings, while Gabriel Mangabeira placed third in 51.93.

Lucas Kanieski posted the top-ranked time in the men's 800 free with a 7:47.62, while Luiz Arapiraca touched second in 7:55.67. Marcos Oliveira earned third in 7:56.03.

Nicholas Dos Santos touched out Cesar Cielo in the men's 50 fly, 22.69 to 22.71. The two joined Steffen Deibler (22.49), Geoff Huegill (22.95) and Glauber Silva (22.98) as the only men under 23 seconds in the early goings of the short course season this year. Kaio Almeida picked up third in 23.30.

Fabiola Molina claimed the women's 100 back title in 58.71, while Etiene Medeiros took second in 1:00.18. Zsuzsanna Jakabos wound up third in 1:01.09.

Gabriella Silva won the women's 50 fly in 26.12, while Daniele Jesus placed second in 26.32. Bruna Rocha touched third in 26.75.

In relay action, Natalia Diniz, Carina Hostman, Gabriella Silva and Tatiana Barbosa won the women's 400 medley relay in 4:00.07. Guilherme Guido, Felipe Silva, Gabriel Mangabeira and Nicolas Oliveira topped the men's 400 medley relay in 3:31.22.
