Jose Finkel Trophy Meet: Felipe Silva Rattles South American Record

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, September 23. SHORT course meter racing at the Jose Finkel Trophy Meet continued to move forward with some strong early-season swims, including a top-ranked effort from Felipe Silva.

Silva won the men's 100 breast in 56.79, moving to the top of the early world rankings this year. He cleared his World Cup time of 57.64 by a wide margin, and nearly claimed his South American record of 56.49 set last year. Henrique Barbosa finished second in 58.05, while Tales Cerdeira took third in 58.55.

Kaio Almeida improved to second in the early rankings in the men's 100 fly with a winning time of 51.03. He moved from third to second, leapfrogging Chris Wright's 51.17 from July. Gabriel Mangabeira touched second in 51.53, while Glauber Silva wound up third in 51.58.

Gabriella Silva won the women's 100 fly in 57.97, moving to fourth in the early world rankings. Kim Vandenberg of the U.S. took second overall in 58.96, while Daiene Dias picked up third in 59.32.

Jessica Hardy of the U.S. just missed her qualifying time of 1:05.69 in the women's 100 breast, which put her second in the early world rankings, with a triumphant outing of 1:05.71 today. Carina Hostman finished second in 1:06.02, while Tatiane Sakemi placed third in 1:08.70.

Kristel Kobrich captured the women's 400 free title in 4:08.06, while Manuella Lyrio (4:11.12) and Poliana Okimoto (4:12.37) touched second and third in the middle distance event. Lucas Kanieski grabbed the men's 400 free crown in 3:46.94. Armando Negreiros finished second in 3:47.13, while Rodrigo Castro rounded out the top three in 3:48.29.
