Johns Hopkins Women, Washington & Lee Men Take Home Bluegrass Title

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, February 17. THE Johns Hopkins women's swim team won its second consecutive Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship Saturday night with 733 total points. Wingate University finished in second with 534 points. The Washington and Lee men's swimming team won its fourth-straight Bluegrass Mountain Championship by posting 755 points and besting Wingate by 22 points for a first-place finish on Saturday evening at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club in Charlotte, N.C.

Sophomore Elissa Stautner (The Woodlands, TX/Oak Ridge) earned her third win of the championships by swimming to a first place finish in the 1650 Free. Her time of 17:52.73 was her fastest of the season. Freshman Julia Senerth (Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) placed fifth with a time of 18:32.31, also a season-best time. Freshman Ashley Lopes (Lexington, MA/Lexington) took 10th place with a time of 19:19.83.

Junior Erika Pakkala (Lititz, PA/Warwick) picked up her first win of the weekend, taking first in the 200 Back with a season-best time of 2:08.24. Sophomore Kate Hansen (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) placed fifth in 2:12.67, followed by freshman Megan Zepp (Montgomery Village, MD/Stone Ridge) in sixth with a time of 2:14.53. Sophomore Kristin Cunningham (North Potomac, MD) swam to a third place finish in the 100 Free with a time of 53.61. Sophomore Jackie Rooney (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/The Culver Academies) took sixth in 54.43. Junior Val Nef-Rasmussen (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) placed 10th in 55.10 and freshman Sarah Thomas (Portsmouth, NH/St. Thomas Aquinas) placed 12th in 55.26.

Senior Allie Foster (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Academy) swam to a second place finish in the 200 Breast, finishing in 2:20.94 – a season best. Freshman Caitlin Dennis (Moorsetown, NJ/Merion Mercy Academy) finished in fourth with a time of 2:27.98 and freshman Kayla Culver (Lakewood, CO/Green Mountain) placed 10th in 2:36.31. Freshman Lisa Qu (Atlanta, GA/Westminster) took third in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:12.08 – her fastest of the season. Freshman Robin Schaffer (Dublin, OH/Columbus School for Girls) placed sixth in 2:16.22 and freshman Taylor Mann (Branford, CT/Branford) placed 14th in 2:25.79. Hopkins closed out the championships with a third place finish in the 400 Free Relay. Cunningham, Foster, Neff-Rasmussen and Rooney all swam the relay for a total time of 3:34.90 – the fastest time of the season for the Blue Jays.

On the men's side, the Generals were paced by senior Mike Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) and junior Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day), who both registered NCAA "A" cuts in individual events. Ginder took first in the 200 back with a meet-record time of 1:49.94, while Sweet placed second in the 100 free with a time of 45.40.

Ginder and Sweet were joined by junior Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) and senior Dave Croushore (Glen Allen, Va./North Penn) on the 400 free relay team, which took first place in a school- and meet-record time of 3:04.49. The relay time was also good enough for an NCAA "B" cut.
