Johns Hopkins Blue Jays Swoop In Verbal Commitments from Mitchell List, Jonik Surprenant

NEW COMMITS: Johns Hopkins University has scored two verbal commitments to start off their class of 2025 recruiting from Westerville, Ohio native Mitchell List and Jonik Surprenant of Silver Spring, Md.

Both talented swimmers will suit up for the Blue Jays in the fall of 2021.

He told Swimming World:

“I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Johns Hopkins University! I want to thank my family, friends and coaches for helping me get to this point, and thank Coach Scott for giving me the opportunity to join such a great program! Go Blue Jays!”

A talented breaststroker, List does his club swimming with New Albany Aquatic Club and owns the U.S. Open cut in the 200m breast. He placed 20th in the 200 breast at Juniors East in December and had a strong showing at NCSAs in 2019. Last summer, he took fifth in the 50m breast at Cleveland Sectionals before going on to notch two best time at Junior Nationals.

His best times include:

  • 100 breast – 56.33
  • 200 breast – 2:02.39
  • 100 IM – 1:57.28

Also competing for Saint Charles Preparatory High School, List finished 13th in the 100 breast at the Ohio State Championships during his sophomore season. He has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors twice in his career thus far.

JONIK SURPRENANT

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Johns Hopkins University. I would like to thank all of my friends, family, teachers, coaches, and parents for supporting me along the way. Go Blue Jays!”

A Junior National qualifier, Surprenant swims year-round with Rockville Montgomery Swim Club and most recently placed fourth in the 1000 free and sixth in the 200 IM at Potomac Valley Seniors. He recorded three top-10 finishes at Potomac Valley LCM Seniors last long course season and finished 18th in the 800m free at NCSAs.

His best times include:

  • 500 free – 4:35.15
  • 1000 free – 9:29.07
  • 1650 free – 15:51.24
  • 100 fly – 51.68
  • 200 fly – 1:51.98

A current senior at James H. Blake High School, Surprenant is a six-time Maryland 3-4A State Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American was the 500 free runner-up and took third in the 200 free as a junior while taking fifth and 12th, respectively, in those events during his sophomore season.
