NEW COMMIT: Fort Collins, Colo. native John Walgast has announced his intention to remain in-state for his college career and will attend Colorado Mesa University beginning in the fall of 2021.

He told Swimming World:

“I’m super excited to announce my verbal commitment to the Colorado Mesa University!  The swim program and academics are both a perfect fit for me.  Caoch Wender and Coach Hastings and the Team were incredibly impressive.  I would like to thank my parents, family and club coaches for all of the opportunities that they have given me!  I am so grateful for this wonderful opportunity.”

Walgast, who does his club swimming with Fort Collins Area Swim Team, most recently picked up four new best times at the FAST Invite in February and had a great showing at Colorado Seniors in February 2020. In Summer 2019, he finaled in three events at Arena Western Zones where his highest finish was an 11th-place showing in the 400m IM.

His best times include:

  • 100 free – 46.53
  • 200 free – 1:41.55
  • 100 back – 50.86
  • 200 back – 1:51.62
  • 100 fly – 49.73
  • 200 fly – 1:53.78
  • 200 IM – 1:52.43
  • 400 IM – 4:12.53

Also competing for Rocky Mountain High School, Walgast finished 14th in the 200 IM as a sophomore at the Colorado 5A State Championships.

Walgast is a major get for the Mavericks, who are fresh off an RMAC Championship title. He would’ve scored in the A-final of the 100 back, 100/200 fly, 200 free, 200 back, and 200/400 IM as well as the B-final of the 100 free at the conference meet.
