AUSTIN – Jeff Newkirk, the fourth-ranked recruit out of the state of Virginia in Collegeswimming.com‘s recruit rankings, has verbally committed to swim for the University of Texas next fall.

Newkirk trains under Dudley Duncan and John Smithson at Quest Swimming in Midlothian, and has made huge improvements in only three years of swimming competitively. Newkirk started swimming during his freshman year of high school and has already qualified for Olympic Trials in the 200 free (1:51.86). In addition to the 200 free in long course, he excels at the 50 free (20.94), 100 free (45.61), 200 free (1:37.79), 500 free (4:30.15) and 100 fly (50.49) in short course yards.

He’ll give the Longhorns lots of options for relays and individual events at dual meets, and at the Big 12 Championships. Newkirk’s 200 free time would have made the A final at the 2014 meet, while five of his other times would’ve made the B final.
