Janet Evans Invitational: Tae Hwan Park, Ous Mellouli Battle on Second Night

IRVINE, California, May 23. THE second evening of long course meter swimming at the Janet Evans Invitational featured a pair of battles between Olympians Tae Hwan Park and Ous Mellouli.

Trojan teammates Park and Mellouli put on a show in the men's 200 free with Park coming out on top, 1:47.43 to 1:47.58. Zoltan Povazsay, also of Trojan, placed third in 1:49.32. California's Dana Vollmer (1:58.46) and Hannah Wilson (2:01.90) took first and second in the women's 200 free. The Armada's Samantha Shellem touched third in 2:02.57.

Trojan's Hidemasa Sano (4:20.77) and James Martin (4:30.81) went 1-2 in the men's 400 IM with PASA's Young Tae Seo taking third in 4:30.87. Trojan's Katinka Hosszu earned another win for her club with a 4:33.88 in the women's 400 IM. Parkway's Elizabeth Smith took second in 4:46.79, while The Armada's Kirstie Chen finished third in 4:48.59.

Jason Dunford captured the men's 100 fly in 52.33 with Sano (53.44) and Stanford's Eugene Godsoe (53.79) placing second and third. Stanford's Elaine Breeden won the women's 100 fly in 59.15 with Vollmer (59.65) and Wilson (1:00.79) rounding out the top three.

Nova's Derya Buyukuncu wrapped up the men's 200 back title in 2:00.30 with Godsoe (2:01.63) and Korea's Ji-Hyun Kim (2:04.52) finishing second and third. Deanna Matthews pocketed the women's 200 back in 2:17.30 with Santa Clara's Stephanie Wei (2:19.76) and Brophy's Ashley Brewer (2:20.61) touching second and third.

Mellouli found some retribution from Park in the men's 400 free, as Mellouli won, 3:47.15 to 3:52.54. Stanford's Chad La Tourette finished third in 3:53.04.

The women's 800 free relay title went to Shaneese Nowlan, Natasha Fung, Matthews and Madison Mills, who won in 8:32.03. Rose Bowl Aquatic's quartet of Shane Tusup, Daniel Adamczyk, Clark Fisher and Joe Costa won the men's crown in 8:05.92.
