Italian Championships: Close Calls Highlight Third Day

LIVORNO, Italy, April 3. THE third day of swimming at the Italian Championships held in Livorno provided the fans some exciting finishes.

Federico Colbertaldo started the evening with a victory in the men's 400 freestyle when he clocked a 3:48.39. Samuel Pizzetti finished second in 3:51.42, while Cesare Sciocchetti took third in 3:52.10.

Elisa Apostoli followed in the women's 50 back with a close win over Sara Fazzini, 29.78 to 29.83, while Mirco Di Tora garnered the men's 50 back title in 26.05 over Marco Malinverno's 26.38.

The close calls continued in the women's 100 fly as Silvia Di Pietro touched out Ilaria Bianchi, 1:00.17 to 1:00.19, for the title. Elena Gemo made it a three-way finish with a third-place 1:00.21.

Loris Facci then had a touch-out triumph over Edoardo Giorgetti in the men's 100 breast as Facci emerged with the win, 1:01.71 to 1:01.79.

In the women's 400 free, Flavia Zoccari had an easier time of it with a winning effort of 4:11.92 over Roberta Ioppi's second-place 4:13.38.

Alessandro Calvi then snatched the men's 50 free title with a 22.84, while Luca Leonardi finished second in 22.96.

In the 400 medley relays, Romina Armellini, Noemi Di Renzo, Ambra Migliori and Federica Pellegrini won for the women in 4:09.75, while Mattia Aversa, Giorgetti, Simone Ciancarini and Nicola Cassio took the men's title in 3:41.47.
