ISL Times Report: Duncan Scott, Caeleb Dressel Show off Versatility

The International Swimming League has completed its regular season of 11 matches, leaving eight teams set for the playoffs in November. Before those teams convene in Eindhoven, let’s take a look back at the top 10 times in each event from the first 11 matches of the season.

A few notes on the men’s die of the draw:

– It won’t surprise anyone that Caeleb Dressel has a top-10 time in six different events: The 50 and 100 freestyle, 50 and 100 butterfly, 100 and 200 individual medley. But the co-leader in that department might be a little surprising. It’s Duncan Scott of the London Roar. He holds the league’s top time in the men’s 200 free and is second in the 400 free. But he’s also in the top 10 (top seven, in fact) in the 100 free and all three individual medleys.

– Behind Dressel and Scott, five other swimmers are in the top 10 in each of four events. Two of them are, like Scott, IMers. Andreas Vazaios is in the top 10 of all three IMs (from 100 to 400, in order, fifth, third and eighth), as is Tomoe Hvas (eighth, fifth, seventh). Both are also in the top 10 in the 200 fly, which is Hvas’s highest placement in third.

– The most impressive collection of times might belong to Daiya Seto, whose season with the Tokyo Frog Kings ended in Match 11. Seto is first in the 200 IM, first in the 400 IM, first in the 200 fly and third in the 200 breast. That’s an astonishingly difficult quadruple.

– The final two swimmers with four top-10 times are both Cali Condors. Justin Ress has pulled the trick over 50 and 100 meters in free and back, while Coleman Stewart has done so in all three backstroke events plus the 100 fly. Stewart has that 100 back world record which is the only one, men or women, of the regular season.

– Stewart is one of three backstrokers with top-10 times over all three distances. Evgeny Rylov is the obvious one, the Energy Standard swimmer fourth over 50 meters, third over 100 and second over 200. Christian Diener of the London Roar is the other; he similarly improves as the race gets longer, from 10th over 50 to third over 200.

Ilya Shymanovich owned the breaststroke field in the regular season. The Energy Standard swimmer had the best time in each of the three distances. Nic Fink posted top-10 times in each distance, varying from third over 50 meters to sixth over 200. Also among that group is Tokyo’s Yasuhiro Koseki, who finishes with the second-fastest 100 breast.

– The gulf in performers between the 50 fly and 200 fly is outlandish. Only one swimmer has mustered a top-10 time over both distances, and it’s an old standby. Tom Shields of the LA Current has the season’s sixth-fastest 50 fly time and is second over both 100 and 200 meters.
